I decided to photograph the various stages of my 10mm dark ages painting and add them to my blog after two TMP colleagues mentioned this might be a good idea. I apologize about the poor photography and lack of specific detail. Anyway, here are some 10mm Irish for Dux Bellorum:

great looking models .
i think the secret of the technique is the gloss varnish before the Soft Tone wash . it must help with keeping the wash off higher areas and keeps it more in the folds and shadows .
definitely a must try technique , thanks !

Thanks, interesting. After a lot of trial and error, I have settled on a technique that is close to yours, only I varnish in satin, apply the wash and then varnish in mat, which I thought helps protect everything and knocks back the figure after the gloss / wash processes and stops the ink being rubbed off the high points to reveal the gloss / Satin.

I am all for losing an extra step, so will look again at this. I have found that leaving a figure for 36 hours rather than 24 after varnishing is needed for the varnish to fully cure before the inks go on, though I am brushing rather than spraying.

Cheers and my thanks, happy gaming.
