Yes, people did actually bathe in the middle ages. Not very often, but they did. There is a recorded sermon from a Saxon bishop complaining that good Saxon girls were going out with boys from across the Danelaw because the Danish boys bathed once a week. |

Full body bathing was not desirable for most of the year for most of the middle ages. Too cold! But to assume that people went around all grimy and with filthy clothes is not, imho, an accurate portrayal of the masses…. |

Victorian myth rears its head again. People in the Middle Ages bathed quite frequently, far more than "once a year." Probably not daily, as in the US today, but some historians suggest that bathing in the Middle Ages was more frequent and prevalent than in the Victorian era! So the notion of the perpetually filthy peasant (or even lord), while common, is also false. And you can darn well be certain that if all it took to get the local lasses to look your way was a dunk in some water, then the lads all dunked themselves! (And vice versa.) |

Thanks for the info on bathing. Those are really nice figures but I can not imagine what I would use them for since I no longer paint/build vignettes. Beautiful work by the sculptor and by the painter. |
