I've been reading about a air combat over Vietnam '65-'68. A number of these encounters the MiGs are noted as firing rockets. But I can't determine what they were firing. Some notes say Alkali missiles, but those are beam riding missiles, nothing a MiG-17 could support. I'm thinking they are firing standard air to ground rockets S-58s. |

The MiG-17PM/PFU could carry Alkali missiles. I don't recall of the NVAF had any of these (I think most were either -Fs or chinese J-5s IIRC). Damon. |

I seem to recall the early Alkalis were about as accurate as unguided air-to-ground rockets, so…….. |

The USAF at least considered unguided rockets a viable air-to-air weapon system in the 1950s (see the F-89 for one example), at least for use against bombers. I'm not certain about the USSR, but it's certainly a viable possibility, and even more so for the PVAF who were making due with what they could get. |
