"Fearing a Russian invasion and occupation of Alaska, the U.S. government in the early Cold War years recruited and trained fishermen, bush pilots, trappers and other private citizens across Alaska for a covert network to feed wartime intelligence to the military, newly declassified Air Force and FBI documents show. Invasion of Alaska? Yes. It seemed like a real possibility in 1950. "The military believes that it would be an airborne invasion involving bombing and the dropping of paratroopers," one FBI memo said. Didn't the USSR (under Stalin) have at least draft plans for this ? aka. Operation Anaconda(not confused with 2002) or Anhydra or similar-sounding?? ….Sounds like a epic disaster in-the-making, but would be a terrific situation to wargame out. |

@Skippy: the ice is thick enough, but I'd hate to try it. There's a whole lot of NOTHING out there and Soviet tanks still have lousy range-before-breakdown/overhaul! |

Invade Alaska and no one in the mainland would know :) Stalin would have had to send us a letter asking us to please come fight for it, so he wouldn't feel like it had all been in vain. |
