I'm interested in a set of Napoleonics rules that are played on a hex grid. I have a collection of 15mm figures and a 4'x6' grid with 3" hexes. Can anyone recommend a good set of rules? Thanks. |

There are these: link I can't comment on them; I just know they exist. I assume you are looking for something other than Command and Colors type rules/games. I think Volley and Bayonet would easily convert to a hex based game. |

Have you tried the GMT "Commands and Colors: Napoleonics" game? |

Dear Svsavory ACTUALLY I think I have one in my files. I don't use it, and I first saw it in 1968 at a Philadelpia War Game convention. It was a set of Rules from France I believe and it was translated by Pat Condray. it was set up for 30mm flats, but that should be oK for 15mm. It's only a dozen pages or so long, if you are interested I'll try and find it and make copies to send you. contact me at sigurd@eclipse.net. I have no way of sending it electronically so you'll have to give me your postal delivery address. I think it was called "The Wargame or something like that.' Oh heck! let me go find it… Ok I'm back, I found it. It's called "Le Kriegspiel" The subtitle is Rules of a group of the Societe' de Collectuers de fgurines Historique. Translated by Pat Condray. I find no date, but I know it's at least as old as 1968 when I acquired it from Pat. Apparently he notes the game is set up for 5" hexagons, but this can be easily modified. There are 31 pages, two sides on a sheet. Otto |

Dear Mark Sorry don't have it on electronic format. As I said, you hve to send me your postal delivery address to sigurd@eclipse. net. I also found a second version of it, basically an update by Pat called "The Wargame which is sort of an abridgement and rework of it. I'll send you copies of that too. By the way I actually SAW a game of this being played back in 1968 by Bob Wall and Pat Condray with 30mm flats. I didn't play. Looked a bit odd to me. they had a wierd system of mounting the flats on the stands. Basically a flat piece of paper cut to the base size with a second piece of paper stapled on top which had slits 3/4" of the way across the top. This allowed the base of the flat to be slid into this "slitted envelop" and moved. Kind of the ancestor of the Sabot stand. It looked, with these beautifully painted flats in it, incredibly ugly. By the way I know Ray Mowery is lurking somewhere around here. Maybe he can comment more. |

There's a game out there called Grognards and Grenadiers that would fit the bill. There are several here that play it. It's supposedly fast paced and card driven, and a game can be finished in 90 minutes. I don't recall if I played it, so can offer no opinion on the mechanics. |

Our game of choice for hex based Napoleonics is command and colours. 15mm on hexon hexes. |

I recommend Command & Colors Napoleonics. I play it with miniatures on a hex cloth. It is quite expensive (as you're buying a complete boardgame rather than a set of wargames rules) -I'm not sure if you can just buy the rules, cards, dice and scenario booklet separately. |

Commands and colors with a simple saving throw really REALLY helps with unit survival. I love this game. You can use grid squares as well as hexes (which I do). |

For something different, I'd recommend Bonaparte Waltz by Vincent Tsoa. I got to play test the rules and the game worked very well. You will have to contact him for the rules. He is on TMP frequently. His TMP screan name is vtsaogames. Also, Command and Colors is a fine game so another vote here. I have not played the Napoleonic version but have played the Ancients version a few times. |

"This appears to be a free download of the CCN rules." Yes, all the rules are available for free, including all the expansions, just as they are for many other CnC games. You'd have to make the command cards yourself though. |

Another strong recommendation for CC Napoleonics. Fun, quick, easy, hex based, more depth than what first appears, and a large number of players available. |

Thanks for the tip John. Right now Bonaparte Waltz is on the verge of a make-over, after a long lay off. I'm trying to simplify it further. Real life got in the way, messy business. |
