Feuer und Furia Francese are rules for European style battles in the period 1840 – 1880. Battles in the rest of the world can also be fought a long as the forces are similar to those used in Europe at the time. For example the American Civil War.

The focus of the rules is on the Crimean War (1853-56), the Franco-Austrian War of 1859, the American Civil War (1861-1865), the War of 1866 and the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871. Details of other conflicts during the period will be available later.

The rules are for large battles of this period. The players will usually command a Corps or other large part of a full army, if not the whole army. One base usually represents 600 infantry, 300 cavalry or 12 guns. A unit is usually 3 to 12 bases and represents a brigade.

The inspiration for these rules is the popular Fire and Fury rules. They are a stand alone set which aim to capture the feel of these rules but with changes to reflect the warfare of the period. This includes obvious factors such as for the variety of weapons and tactics of the wars of the period. Key to these are individual movement/morale tables for each army in each conflict designed to reflect that army's performance. For example, there is not a single movement/morale table for the Franco Prussian War but four tables. For the two sides there are one each for the early part of the war, the Imperial phase, with another two for the later part of the war, the Republican phase. While the French movement/morale table for the 1859 is different to the Franco Prussian tables. Other major changes are the use of three six sided dice and rules for Corps and Army Morale.

The rules are only available as a PDF and cost £8.70 GBP.

So is this a conglomeration of the various rules, scenarios, and period flavorings that you had/have on your game club site? Is there additional work that did not appear on the site? I notice that the scale has changed from 1:200 or 1:300 to 1:600 per infantry base. Any other changes?

WFGamers31 Aug 2014 12:52 p.m. PST

Darryl there have been many changes to the existing version on the website but also obviously many of the ideas from there are also present. As you have noticed the scale has changed which means that large battles are more doable. There are numerous small changes but as mentioned the major ones are the dice, corps/army morale and individual movement tables.

So now all combat, movement, etc, is done using 3 D6, rather than a single D10. One reason for this is it allows other factors to be added but the main reason is for the Corps/Army Morale. If the morale of the Corps or Army fails the units roll 1 less dice on the movement tables. These tables are, as mentioned, individual and specific. Both sides use their own table which is different to their opponent and difficult to the same army in other wars.

The set on the website is a variant of the original F&F rules. This set is inspired by the original F&F & our variant but is a stand alone set.

Finally on the website we will change the scenarios to the new rules when we have time and hopefully add some more.

Hasn't "Fire and Furia Francese" been around for several years already?

WFGamers31 Aug 2014 5:07 p.m. PST

Shipka: You can do all of them with this set but only 1859 and 1866 are covered in detail at the moment

nnascati: Yes 'Fire and' has been used successfully since the early 90's. 'Feuer und' is a new set of rules covering the same period. It is not exactly a 2nd version of 'Fire and' but a new set with some things in common.

Hmm, you got my attention.

The age old question of base sizes. I know F&F use 1"x1". Trouble is all my stuff is based to POW ie 30x15mm for inf, 30x30mm for cav and 30x40mm for arty.

Can these sizes practically be used for your rules?

WFGamers09 Sep 2014 3:49 a.m. PST

In the rules all the measurements are in terms of base width. A standard infantry move is 12 (like in F&F as you seem familiar with these) times whatever your base width. So that would be 12" if you have 1" frontage base but 24" if you have 2" bases.

Therefore in theory you can use any sized bases, the main consideration being your table size.

You should use 30mm as the standard unit of measure and go from there. Personally I would just use 1" as the standard measure as the difference between 25 and 30mm's is not great. It shouldn't make any difference and will be easier.

Does anyone familiar with these rules think that there might be some copyright infringement here since someone is charging a fee for the rules?
