Seeking recommendations for Gettysburg guides that anybody has used, either NPS or private.

also if any private tours left from Washington.

If you can still do a guided horseback trip from Artillery Ridge campsite you should definitely book it. Great way to see the battlefield.

The licensed tour guides operating out of the Visitor's Center are the best. They undergo a pretty tough testing process of their battlefield and Civil War knowledge before receiving their license. They are more expensive than the tours offered through the various tourist outfits, but they know what they are talking about.

And ditto what uglyfatbloke said about the horseback tour. It covers only a small part of the battlefield and the "guides" have very limited knowledge, but well worth it. The ride gives you a better perspective of what a commander actually saw.

Also join some of the longer 1-2 hour Park Ranger tours. These guys really know their stuff and they are free tours. I did a two hour tour of the Peach Orchard and Wheat Field that was one of the best tours that ive ever done.

I had a wonderful 3 hour guided tour last May from the NPS center. The licensed guide was great. He knew his stuff, was personaable, and took us from day 1 to day 3. Highly recommended. We also did a horse tour which was as already stated somewhat limited in scope, but did give a perspective that the car tour didn't. Also highly recommended, just stay on your horse. Lloyd

Another vote for the LBGs, "Licensed Battlefield Guides". They have to take an extensive test. They know their stuff. You can tailor a session to your needs, if you want to do it from the 1st shot marker to the post battle hospital sites you can do it or if you want to concentrate or say Little Round Top you can do that. You can arrange a tour at the desk at the Visitor's Center. If you want a horseback tour from Artillery Ridge an excellent Guide is Terry Deal Latscher. While there are bus tours from Washington I don't know of private ones.

The reality of Gettysburg is that only Licensed Battlefield Guides are allowed to charge for tours of the field. Therefore the only real question is what format you want that tour to take.

I need to make a correction, people can get special permission to conduct tours.

DC? No idea. I live on the other end of Pennsy by King of Prussia.

As far as guides, go with Bob Wingert. He's a fellow member of the Gettysburg Area Gamers. I would have recommended Woody Christ, but he passed this December last.
