Artificial intelligence will likely feature prominently onboard the Pentagon's next-generation successors to the Boeing F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor… link |

I can see having the defensive systems (jammers, chaff and flares) all run by an Expert System or rudimentary AI. In fact, that's where I'd WANT an AI running the show, to remove the 0.5sec human reaction time from the system. Maybe some help in threat prioritization, too, acting as a second set of 'eyes' for the pilot of a dogfighter. I'm really not sure about an AI on the weapons, though. Maybe prioritizing which bird takes which target based on where the bird is in relation to the targets and ingress/egree routes. But I do NOT want an AI pulling the trigger. |

Yep, definitely very useful for deploying countermeasures. On a related note, supposedly the Saab Viggen had a computer-interface for its gun system, which actually fired the guns automatically when the autopilot got them on the target during high-G maneuvering, without pilot intervention. I suspect the pilot would need to turn that system on though, but clearly, computers are a lot better than humans at some stuff, especially those which require ultra-fast reactions. |
