I have been searching for info on the Soviet artillery division. I have noticed a division in the 3 Shock Army area… Looking at an image from the old SPI game , The Next War.

Can anyone point me in the direction of information on how these divisions were organized? Also, would the events of this division be parceled out? If so how?

Try here for a starting point – Page 14 in particular. Doctrine was to mass them, not parcel them out.

Thanks Dom! This looks very helpful.

No problem – obviously treat with the same huge pinch of salt that's advised for all intelligence estimates, but it gives you something to work with at least.

I believe the "Shock" was changed to "Assault" in the mid to late 1950's, wasn't it?

Dom, the scale I am putting together is more operational… So at least I can feel comfortable with the broad strokes.

History, how is the new uniform color working out for you? It's been a while since we talked… I am finally taking myself off the sidelines after a hectic summer.

Hi creative. That 50/50 mix of charred brown and US field drab has been just the ticket!

Looking good! I have finally started painting again… I need to do a blog update. I also got a couple of tables this summer for my little corner of the hobby world.

3 Shock Army became 3 Combined Arms Army in the 1950s or thereabouts, but we kept calling it 3 Shock Army for some reason.

HistoryPhD30 Aug 2014 5:45 a.m. PST

I think it changed to "assault" in the 50's and then to "combined arms" in the late 60's?

creativeguy30 Aug 2014 6:09 a.m. PST

I just keep calling it that because it continues to get called that!

You may want to check out FM 100-2-3 for organization and FM 100-2-1 for how they are used. You should easily be able to google and down load both.

It was definitely called 3 SA when 1 (BR) Corps was facing it in the 80s. (Those were the days…)

HistoryPhD31 Aug 2014 7:49 a.m. PST

I think we just kept calling it the 3SA out of force of habit. From the Soviet point of view, the name changed twice.
