Hi everybody!
I am new here! Well, I read this site for months, and this is the first time I write here! :-)
I am planning to build a Roman city, 28mm size.
The idea is to use from wargamesbuildings.co.uk wall (20' high) and "street", houses from hovelsltd.co.uk and najewitz-modellbau.de, a temple from najewitz-modellbau.de, the palace from grandmanner.co.uk and the Steve Barber's arena (but it is shorter than houses and I am not sure). Do you know an arena about 12cm high?
What do you think about it? Do you have suggestions or other ideas? Do you know where I can buy other buildings, like houses, bath, "shop", metalwalker, tavern or other think that could make more realistic my city?
Thank you very much for your help!
Marco

Hi Marco,

Sounds like a great idea.
I have a half-shelved idea for a similar, though mine is a Greek city.
If you are looking for models, Foundry do a nice little range. I have painted some on my blog –

I have also started sculpting some street furniture – vases, sacks etc. as these are hard to find. Someday I will post photos.

I did a Roman city that was mostly scratch-built using styrofoam and foam board. Dowel rods and wedding cake columns are fairly inexpensive sources for the columns. I'm not the most skilled scratch-builder but I found doing basic Roman structures fairly easy.

Here's some pictures on my blog:

I would start out with either a forum with temples, basillicas and arches, or a sample street with town houses and insulae (apartment buildings) if you want street fighting.

Tango's post on a Roman house shows a typical Roman house.

If you google earth to Pompeii (old city, southeast of Naples and directly south of Mt. Vesuvius, which is very obvious) and go to the forum you can see many houses (all connected) on the roads just to the east of the forum. Also many theaters and the amphitheater on the very eastern end. That should give you some ideas as well

Thank you for your answers!
Well, I forgot to say one thing: I am very busy and I did not have enough time to create buildings by myself, so my idea is to buy assembled and painted buildings. I know it will be expensive, but I am not in a hurry!

No more help?
In your opinion, arena it is too small or is it good?

For a siege with 2 armies of 2000 points each, how much the city should be big? 50x50 cm?
