Keith, I have never seen a soldier pushing a bayonet. Did they actually do that and if so from what source is that from? Of course Lance does a fine job with his figures but what is this based off of?

Hi Joe, based on the pre revolutionary war drill: bayonets were charged high or low, the order to 'push your bayonet' was given in this case from the high charge. When you do it as part of a drilled unit, you realise how effective it must have been, the result most often was that the receivers of such an attack didn't wait around for it, especially having seen the flash of bayonets flourished overhead as the order to fix bayonets was given. I thought this would make a nice change of pose for the 18th century linear formations – and it just looks good. Of course, there'll be other poses too including firing etc

I've tried that position in my re-enacting career. Very weak grip. Probably only effective as the third row of a square.

When I was doing FIW reenacting this particular drill was not comfortable for me either. I was use to ACW drills and modern military drills. With that being said, it is historically accurate, and gives the gamer a pose that is usually neglected.

As Keith says, it's historically accurate and I've had no problem drilling it at Hampton Court Palace etc, feels really good in a decent sized unit. I also re-enact ACW drill, but just had to put the Victorian stuff out of my head, mind you, my biggest period is ECW and the bayonet fighting of the period is a direct development from how the pike was gripped by the butt – for me it's a very steady grip and also allows stronger thrust and further reach, as with most drills, just a matter of practice.
Keith's other point is the main thing for me, and why I sculpted it, it gives a great looking period unit for the linear tactics of the day, different from the usual offerings and captures the true feel of the times.
