I'm sure it's been discussed before, on this and other forums, but I ask you here and now: Who are your favorite artists when it comes to 18th century military subjects? And: What are some of your favorite works? Painters, illustrators, sculptors, re-enactors, diorama makers, contemporary, later, all are welcomed. Even (gasp) theatrical recreations, cinema, opera, and the like. With, possibly, an understandable emphasis on gloriously overly-romanticized Age of Reason-esque tableau, if you please. Cheers. |

Howard Pyle's painting Nation Makers is what I want my American Revolution troops to look like- sturdy but ragged. Not very historical as a painting, but I defy the patriot to look on it and remain unmoved. NC Wyth's illustrations for Last of the Mohicans, Treasure island and Kidnaped are great. I have always loved Philippoteaux's painting Battle of Fontenoy: it sums up the 18th century in my imagination. The dandy officers doffing their hats, flags flapping, musicians waiting their cue, the men in line like toy soldier, the sergeant dressing the line with a spontoon- its great. None of these are actually from the 18th century, though. |

Weirdly, the counter showed 0 replies, sorry. I thought nobody was interested, so I blogged about it instead. Now I have a small FIW archive, at least. :) Pyle and Wyeth, both personal favorites. re: Philippoteaux's painting Battle of Fontenoy I had to google it.
Impressive. Must be a big painting. Turns out I like Robert Griffing, Nat Youngblood, Randy Steele, Giuseppe Rava, Victor Mays and a host of others, including as always, W Ben Hunt and SE Ellacott. Blogospheric Bloviations at link. link |
