The Soviets had two completely different roles for the Advanced Guard and Forward Detachments but both "could" have similar compositions.

I am interested in finding out in what circumstances would a MRD 1st Echeleon Regiment ever provide both (leaving a main body of a Bn+), if a second Echeleon regiment then it would have most likely be BTR equipped.

Most NATO pubs indicate that BMP would normally be expected but I know of at least one piece of work which identified that BTR Regiments would probably lead in the more dense areas as they had more dismounted combat power.

I did read something along those lines relating to BTR-70-equipped units. The high-angle 14.5 mounting was far more useful in built-up areas than BMP-1 or BTR-60PB.

This suggests the Forward detachment was made up from the Army or divisions separate regiment or battalion, respectively. I guess the composition of the FD or AG's APC contingent, depended on the composition of its parent unit.

As above, the parent unit would determine the vehicle mix. It may be OOP now, but Glantzs "Spearhead of the Offensive. The Soviet conduct of tactical manoeuvre" has all you could ever want to know about Forward Detachments.

In escence the lead regiment would provide its own advance guard
Forward detachments for Div would come from A 2nd echelon regiment and could be a reinforced Bn

Army level would be provided at regimental strength from a second echelon div
This would be reinforced by air assault from from army and front assets

A lead regiment on the main axis could have a number of forward detachments in front of it to support Manouver. block the enemy and overcome obsticals in order to maintain main body momentum

As a security measure the regiment would form its own advanced guard. As stated above Glanz is the best reference.

The TTP and air assault posts on the scenarios page covers this and the available references

Who lead depended on the nature of the defence MRR BTR against more solid defences. BMP tank in more fluid situations
