"The United States is preparing military options, including surveillance flights, to pressure Islamic State in Syria, U.S. officials said on Monday, but they cautioned no decision had been made to expand U.S. action beyond the limited airstrikes under way in Iraq.

President Barack Obama has so far sought a limited military campaign in Iraq focused on protecting American diplomats and civilians under direct threat. Still, officials have not ruled out escalating military action against the Islamic State militant group, which has increased its overt threats against the United States…"

Tango01, this is too close to blue fezzy.

I agree with mad monkey.

It's a news report.

There is nothnig blue fezzy about it.

Good fodder for ultramodern gaming scenerios, though I wish we'd stop telegraphing what we will and will not do, in advance.

My commentary is a critique on the poor tactics used being used in the war on terrorists.

The BBC were doing that in 1982, so there is a long tradition of leaky opsec.

Which military options does the US need to employ to defeat ISIS?

ISIS is just a bunch of thugs, especially nasty thugs, but thugs nonetheless.

Go after their cash reserves and their cheerleaders.

Which military options does the US need to employ to defeat ISIS?

It's more a case of which military options does the US need to employ within the restrictions likely to be imposed by Washington. And assuming those restrictions leave enough capacity to defeat IS as a de facto state, rather than merely contain it.
Question for Americans: How far can the President go with the current military action before having to get congressional approval?
(Obviously I'm only asking to get parameters for a hypothetical wargames campaign. . . )

Best option, IMO : SF, CIA, etc. types with heavy CAS/drones, maybe even Naval Gun/missile fire, in support of local/region ground forces … even if that only means the Kurds … I know that US, UK, France and Germany are/will send supplies, etc. … I'm not sure if any of the moslem states are. Hopefully there are some in the 7 nations according to CNN, that are sending support. And as I have said before, GHQ pretty much has everything you'd need to play these battles …
