I'm in a quandary over which 28mm Seleucids to purchase. I am expanding an existing army made from OG figures. I'll need some phalangites, thureophoroi, neo-tarantine horse, some skirmishers, generals and an elephant. Eventually I'll redo my cataphracts as the OG are on the half armored horses. I love aventine figures but they don't have all that I eventually need. Polemarch looks good but not sure on size and how good they really are. Clueless about Magister Militum and their offerings.

Anyway some input would be appreciated!

Regards,
Tom

If you already have an army from Old Glory why not use their figures to keep expanding it? The OG phalangites are nice and I think they have about everything. I like the polemarch range but I'm not sure how compatible they will be with your OG stuff. I think they'll probably be fine.

Relic and Polemarch and Aventine are bigger but will work with OG. Aventine are the largest. Relic are skinnier… 1st Corps and Magister Militum are a tad smaller.

1also take a look at the extensive 1st Corps range of Successors.

They are in a slightly different style than OG, but sizewise are comparable. Price is also comparable to OG.

And they have everything you ask for (and much more)!

Keith from Aventine said in a post that they would be doing more successor figures, specifically Seleucid (a personal favorite of his apparently), though he did not give a timeline on that (after Samnites, he said). You might not want to wait but I thought I'd pass that along.

Great figures, JJ!

The Polemarch scythed chariot is gorgeous! How are Polemarch sized relative to Aventine, in case I choose to mix them?

Thanks all for the responses!

Polemarch and Aventine are fairly close… chances are you will not need to mix and match between them. The Polemarch range has the later Tarantines, Relic and Aventine have the early style.

This is the Aventine war elephant (painted by Paul Rigby) against 1st Corps Egyptians (painted by Allen Curtis):

The larger Aventine figures look fine on elephants.

Sadly I have very few Aventine figures done so its tough to do a side by side compare.

Tom, I have Relic, Polemarch and Aventine. IMHO Aventine are bigger, Relic thinner and Polemarch in between. I would not mix figures I would keep them in there separate units! Also Foundry figures match well with the Polemarch range!!Mike Adams

All very good suggestions but have a look at Essex as well. They do phalangites with trousers as well as Seleucid heavy cavalry that I have used in a Cleruch unit.

In their later Hoplite range they have a very serviceable thorakitai and thureophoroi – chunky but mix well with Aventine and Relic (both of whom are a little thinner). The later Hoplite mounted General makes a good 'older' command figure. Relic also does an excellent scythed chariot – I have 1 each of the Polemarch and Relic.

Some very pretty phalanges!

I have some 1st Corps scythed chariots, which I like a lot!

In my successor armies I have Old Glory, Foundry, 1st Corps and Polemarch miniatures. I kept them all in their own units.
Next is Aventine, of which I think they will also fit.

I have Tin Soldier figures which I like.

I use Foundry for most of my Selecuids. I think there is some debate about Selecuids wearing pants so I wouldn't get too worried about it. The Polemarch figures look amazing. As an aside, I too would recommend 1st Corp. They look okay unpainted but really come alive painted. I especially like their Selecuid Agema and Kataphract figures.

Over my 43 years of wargaming, I have found that figures from many different manufacturers will work well together on the table. The key is to keep them in separate units. I rarely mix figures from different makers, but that's just my personal take and not a hit on anyone else's ideas.

Buy what strikes your fancy, and what best represents YOUR idea of what you want your army to look like. Buy them a unit at a time, or in units, so you don't have to worry about matching up with some other line.

On the table, you'd be hard pressed, in the masses of minis, to see any noticeable difference from one line to another.

Anyway, that's my 2-cent's on the subject.
