Finally ready for action a unit of Perrys" Bengal Lancers. No particular regiment just generic. Had these painted by Prince Bishop Painting Service. Just need some Guides cavalry now.

Gorgeous unit, Rhingyll, so they for perfectly with your terrain!

Mad Guru, have you put together a Guides cavalry unit yet? If so, what figures did you use? Thanks.

Hi, Rhingyll,

Well, yes, but I think the better way to word it probably is: "Have you put together a SWORD-ARMED unit of (Indian) cavalry yet?"!

The obvious and excellent answer is the old Wargames Foundry Guides figures, which include a British Officer, a Trumpeter, and 2 troopers: one with his sword resting on his shoulder, the other with his sword raised above his head in the midst of charging.

For several years it was difficult if not impossible to buy these over the phone or online from Foundry, but I believe that has changed in the last couple of years, since their management changed hands.

Here's a couple of pics of Foundry Guides cavalry in action…

…and from behind:

The only downside, if any, of these mid-1990s figures is that they are a little on the small side compared with more modern 28mm miniatures.

When I was building up my "Maiwand Day" forces I couldn't find any larger sword-armed Indian cavalry, so the solution I came up with was using the Perry Sudan Bengal Lancer figures, who come with open hands, and small light cavalry sabers from the "Dayton Painting Consortium".

This gave me 2 somewhat different units of sword-armed Indian cavalry to use as the Bombay Light Cavalry and 3rd Scinde Horse.

Here's a couple of pics of the conversions:

Here's a link to an old post with all the conversion details on my blog:

…and here's how they looked after being painted by the very talented Igor Olshansky, AKA: Igwarg here on TMP:

I have the unpainted riders from the Foundry line but no horses. I bought them off of a friend of mine years ago. They do look nice, but you are right, the Foundry horses are a bit smaller than what the current trend seems to be and the figures actually are a little stockier.Seems like the DPS swords would be the way to go and use the Perry Lancers, which by the way look very nice in your photos.

Thanks for the kind words re: my converted sword-armed trooper, Rhingyll! I agree they turned out quite nicely and for not a lot of "conversion" effort. Perhaps one of the new 28mm ranges coming out -- Artizan, Studio Miniatures, etc. -- will include some sword-armed Indian cavalry troopers.

I recently had an online conversation with Studio and they are planning on releasing Sikhs and Ghurkas before the end of the year. They will probably be directed more at the Third Afghan War (not Martini- Henrys) but may useful for us as well.

I'd say they really did your unit justice. Thats not a 'historical' comment, just on the quality of the look. Beautiful.

More than once when these 'less' than steady hands are trying to get my Wargames Factory Colonial British uniforms just right (the webbing / belts etc) I found myself wishing I could just 'ship these soldiers out".. and give them a round trip tour of a paint shop. LOL

Perry does some beautiful Mhadist, but Im focusing on the Zulu Wars of '79, other wise I'd be all over those too!
