Politics aside, Task Force Black actually produced remarkable operational results in Iraq – see TASK FORCE BLACK, by Mark Urban, among others. |

IS is far more hierarchical than AQ. AQ has only ever been a loose association of independent groups with little in the way of organisation, command or common aims. IS operates far more as a modern army and that requires structure, command and control – all things that will cause pain when eliminated. |

Task Force Black only achieved excellent results because they were based in the country they operated in. They had a secure base with excellent intelligence with helicopters on constant standby. Are we saying that we will base Western SF's and all their combat support apparatus and personnel in Syria, with critically the full support of that Assad government? Even then we would not have the intelligence gathering nodes available as we had in Iraq and if we did have information would we share it with the regime? Finally, the SAS often used CTR to plan operations, which would be very hard in ISIL dominated areas. True, AQ was more a loose conglomeration of franchise operations often with familial chains of command but tackling ISIL with SF is a strategy of diminishing returns. ISIL will rely on a conventional communications net more, which can be intercepted and targeted conventionally. I'd have thought the SF units should be better utilised hunting for and killing the ISIL sleeper units who have infiltrated government areas. I liked 'Task Force Black', but thought his best book was 'Big Boy's Rules', about the SAS's and the Det's war against the IRA. |

As history shows cutting off the head of the snake merely means it grows a new head. There is always someone waiting in the wings who believes he knows better how to run things. Kill off the headmen and more will take their place. If they will be as competent as the current crop only time will tell. It is still worth doing as it inevitably slows the snake down while it grows a new head and if combined with a sudden heavy offensive against the snake could result in a major defeat of the snake. |
