"The U.S. Army is developing a robot that can scout enemy positions or detonate improvised explosive devices—and yet is small enough to fit into a soldier's backpack.

The Army has said that not having such man-portable robots resulted in a "disproportionate number of casualties" in Iraq and Afghanistan. Troops had to locate mines, IEDs, unexploded bombs and enemy weapons caches using handheld devices like mine detectors.

These devices can't be remotely operated, which means the user has to stand over the mine … sometimes with unfortunate results…"

LOL! I wonder what weight "man-portable" really means! Because what I read is "fit in backpack".

Either way, hope it works.

Not realy clearing a "mine field" with one robot are they? More like one mine at a time, per robot? :)

RavenscraftCybernetics25 Aug 2014 8:01 a.m. PST

sadly its only one mine per robot…

Nerve-gas-proof portable ‘bot to disarm IEDs

…aren't ALL robots "Nerve-gas-proof" or am I missing something…?

Ironwolf25 Aug 2014 5:31 p.m. PST

^^^^ hahahaha, Mr. Canuck, I was wondering the same thing! Does that mean we have robots that nerve gas will effect?

I also question the backpack size of it compared to its weight?

Milites25 Aug 2014 5:52 p.m. PST

The article says 20 pounds weight, less than an M240. This technology will rapidly improve and the first deployments will seem out of date in 2-3 years, if that.

The space to weight ratio is easily explained by the robots appearance. The real breakthrough will be when robots/drones will allow constant surveillance of an area and detect teams laying their IED's, even in enemy held areas, which will then be engaged by smart munitions.

You can clear a minefield by stampeding a herd of cattle or pigs too … evil grin
