…In Northern Nigeria.

"* Abubakar Shekau recorded video in Gwoza, a town seized earlier this month
* Claims community in Borno State now has 'nothing to do with Nigeria'
* Made statement alongside footage of prisoners being shot while on the floor
* Were told to lie in a ditch before assault rifles were aimed at their heads
* Shekau has now been designated a global terrorist by the United States

Boko Haram's leader has declared an Islamic caliphate in a northeast Nigeria town seized by the extremist militants earlier this month.

Abubakar Shekau, the terrorist behind the kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls four months ago, made the statement during a video which shows a group of prisoners being shot with assault rifles as they lie in a ditch…"

Well we don't have one for a hundred years (which has been quite nice). Then two come along at the same time.

Caliphate vs. Caliphate. Two enter, one leaves.

bruntonboy25 Aug 2014 2:39 a.m. PST

We've seen this sort of thing before. People's front of Judea, Judean People's front….splitters!

Rabelais25 Aug 2014 4:16 a.m. PST

It's unclear at the moment whether Boko Haram have declared a new Caliphate or are announcing that the region is now a province of the Islamic State's Caliphate.

I'm sure they and ISIS will all get along just fine, once they conquer all those pesky countries in between…

Milites25 Aug 2014 5:16 a.m. PST

I rule the Caliphate! No, I rule the Caliphate! No, I rule the Caliphate! etcetera, etcetera. Seriously, these guys deserve to be ridiculed.

CraigH25 Aug 2014 5:28 a.m. PST

I'd thought a harem leader would have other things on his mind…oh wait….what ?

I quite liked 'A Whiter Shade of Pale,' but I always knew they'd be trouble eventually.

Are we still under the illusion that these threads are gaming related in the slightest, as opposed to just giving every one an excuse to cheerlead?

Rabelais25 Aug 2014 10:19 a.m. PST

I'll have a stab at it:
Assuming Boko Haram have essentially declared their loyalty to the IS Caliphate, this means that you can now use some of your African irregular figures in hypothetical IS scenarios as volunteers. Who have somehow travelled to Iraq/Syria. Er, for some reason.

I'm kinda thinking that if the thugs want to play at being nations, it's time we treat them as such. Full-on declarations of war, curbstomping, and then trying the survivors for war crimes.

If you want to game it, gives you the excuse to bring out all the toys.

Raises the question of whether other groups will seek to ally themselves to ISIS, and whether that will have any meaningful impact on ISIS forces.

I wonder if this will also pressure al Quaida to take steps to compete, if they see themselves as losing support.

Bin Laden said Mullah Omar was Caliph. So that makes three.
This calls for a cage match.

The title is Boko Haram, not harem. It means something like "western education is evil".

The copycat caliphates spread! Just today, two drawers of my figure storage table containing pan-Islamic types from the 19th century (mainly) have declared themselves a Caliphate! I had to send in a box of Foreign Legionnaires from one of the other drawers to put a stop to it and restore peace in the War Room.

I'm hearing some odd noises from my game room as well. I'm sure glad I just completed that unit of Bashi Bazouks infantry.

Weasel. No this has nothing to do with gaming.
Apparently, discussing current military events is ok. At least that's the response I got to my complaint to a blatantly political thread.
But it was started by Tango so that's just fine.

Apparently, discussing current military events is ok.

That's what it says in the FAQ.

Isn't everything started by Tango? That's a rule, right?
