I hadn't played Crossfire properly in years and I have to say it was a real treat…
Due to time constraints we only got in half the game but plan to play the second half today!

Very good, a ton of work that is appreciated.

Beauty game! CrossFire… my favorite rules of any period. So cool! Thanks for posting! I'm looking forward to pt. 2…

That table looks gorgeous. Crossfire is always a fun game. Strangely, its actually one of the easier games to explain to non-wargamers.

Yes a truly great set of rules. If only there was a multi-player version.

War Panda24 Aug 2014 9:05 p.m. PST

Thank you guys ;)

Crossfire for me has been a bit of an enigma for many years. I tried it out years ago when I lived back home in Ireland and gamed with a few friends of mine and while I loved it; they didn't quite get it (…idiots! :)

Anyway my niece is over as some of you know and she's an avid gamer …WW2 and all. We both loved the game (even though I was having a little trouble with the hidden deployment rules…)

Alex has played IABSM, FoW, Fireball Forward and others for Company/ multi Platoon many times but this wa by far and away our favourite game ever! The rules are so subtle and effortless that there doesn't seem to be any, your fully focused on decision making and your next command (which of course may come in your opponents turn so you need to be attentive and active during your opponents turn also.

Anyway I'm kind of getting carried away but for this level of battle I don't think I'll be looking at anything else because this was that good. Having an opponent (who by the way was handing my butt on the proverbial platter constantly) that appreciates the game makes all the differences.

There's some parts of the rules (the armour for example) that I'd love to work on but this was a game where the mechanics seemed completely hidden from thought and were truly at the service of recreating authentic battle tactics (holding back a reserve while probing for a weak ling to the defence) and an extremely entertaining games evening.

@ Blue…No Pandas on view in this one ;) I forgot to throw one out…next post :D

@Ivan You're right about easy for new players…it was really easy to jump right in…Similiar actually to your skirmish rules: 5 Men In Normandy…that first game was very easy to get right into the game which I like…

@Hey Tim, Thank you for your kind words :) and yes that's exactly the way I was playing it with my 20mm and while my 15mm are based 3 for a squad and 2 for the MG I had the 20mm already out and kind of wanted to see how it would work individually based.

Obviously a little more work involved in moving everything but you may have noticed that I used Hidden Deployment Markers even for my attackers which speeded thing up considerably. The troops in this case were placed at the point of contact. I liked playing it in the larger scale for a change but certainly for a larger game I'd used the multi based for convenience (I'm lazy by nature)

How are 'Tim's Rules' coming on? I check your site every so often hoping for some sign of them but nothing as yet I think. I may have read that they're finished but not ready for human consumption yet ;)

Anyway apologies guys as well I did think I would have played the second half today but never got an opportunity :(

I now have this image of you spending all Sunday afternoon searching my AAR for a hidden panda…please say its not so ;)

Watch out for the next instalment Blue…there'll be Panda's I promise…

But I hope you're actually reading my hard worked AAR's and not just searching for pandas ;)

Now that I think of it though I'm pretty certain you're just searching for pandas aren't you

Typical Panda, 13 pics before the first shot is fired, then quits just as the action gets going!

Having said that, great stuff going back to Crossfire, and your table, as always, looks amazing. I always had a problem with recon by fire in Crossfire, it just has such a low chance of success, and then if you're playing a set-piece defense, the defender (who is unspotted) isn't going to move, so initiative will go right back. I need to get back to Crossfire myself.

Did you finish up the game and are still working on posting it, or do you still need to finish the game?

I'm really jones-ing for a game, it's been several weeks now and I'm going a bit crazy…

V/R,
Jack

Just Jack – There's been a lot of talk on the Crossfire mailing list about Recon by fire recently. I'll admit, when we played, we never really used it. Too unlikely to work and we're crap at gaming so most of the time, we'd just blunder into ambushes instead :)

Kyote – Sorry to hear that :( Sounds like a bad situation your grand daughter is in.

War Panda26 Aug 2014 2:08 p.m. PST

Yes Blue, sorry to hear that too. God bless your family and I really hope things work out soon. I'm a firm believer in the real power of prayer and I will say one for your situation. I've gone through similar things in the past with family not acting responsibly with their children and its very unpleasant.

Ivan/Jack I'm going to address the Crossfire Recon in that other thread but I think I handled it pretty much as Ivan described… ;)

I'm actually messing about with an idea for the second half of that game that I'm playing but didn't post it on the Crossfire yahoo group yet…it might be too much too soon…theyre a sensitive bunch ;)

Weasel27 Aug 2014 9:48 a.m. PST

They always have good discussion on there but yeah, it can get kind of "lively" :)

It's one of the only game-specific mailing lists I still hang out on though, even when I go through a long spell not playing Crossfire anymore. It's one of those games I think everyone should have played at least once.

Weasel27 Aug 2014 12:17 p.m. PST

Oh and Blue – mailing out your package tomorrow. Got delayed a bit due to a bunch of stuff going on.

I'm not a praying sort but if you want to talk, hit me up on email. Otherwise best wishes.
