Thank you guys ;)
Crossfire for me has been a bit of an enigma for many years. I tried it out years ago when I lived back home in Ireland and gamed with a few friends of mine and while I loved it; they didn't quite get it (…idiots! :)
Anyway my niece is over as some of you know and she's an avid gamer …WW2 and all. We both loved the game (even though I was having a little trouble with the hidden deployment rules…)
Alex has played IABSM, FoW, Fireball Forward and others for Company/ multi Platoon many times but this wa by far and away our favourite game ever! The rules are so subtle and effortless that there doesn't seem to be any, your fully focused on decision making and your next command (which of course may come in your opponents turn so you need to be attentive and active during your opponents turn also.
Anyway I'm kind of getting carried away but for this level of battle I don't think I'll be looking at anything else because this was that good. Having an opponent (who by the way was handing my butt on the proverbial platter constantly) that appreciates the game makes all the differences.
There's some parts of the rules (the armour for example) that I'd love to work on but this was a game where the mechanics seemed completely hidden from thought and were truly at the service of recreating authentic battle tactics (holding back a reserve while probing for a weak ling to the defence) and an extremely entertaining games evening.
@ Blue…No Pandas on view in this one ;) I forgot to throw one out…next post :D
@Ivan You're right about easy for new players…it was really easy to jump right in…Similiar actually to your skirmish rules: 5 Men In Normandy…that first game was very easy to get right into the game which I like…
@Hey Tim, Thank you for your kind words :) and yes that's exactly the way I was playing it with my 20mm and while my 15mm are based 3 for a squad and 2 for the MG I had the 20mm already out and kind of wanted to see how it would work individually based.
Obviously a little more work involved in moving everything but you may have noticed that I used Hidden Deployment Markers even for my attackers which speeded thing up considerably. The troops in this case were placed at the point of contact. I liked playing it in the larger scale for a change but certainly for a larger game I'd used the multi based for convenience (I'm lazy by nature)
How are 'Tim's Rules' coming on? I check your site every so often hoping for some sign of them but nothing as yet I think. I may have read that they're finished but not ready for human consumption yet ;)
Anyway apologies guys as well I did think I would have played the second half today but never got an opportunity :(
