Just looking at the listings of modern vessels by these two manufacturers. Skytrex seem to have gone up in price recently compared to Navwar. Anyone got a view on the relative quality? |

Skytrex has new owners so I can't say about quality. In the past I preferred Navwar but I've not seen the models on the new owners. |

I can't say relative quality, as I have no Skytrex, but I have a bunch of Navwar stuff… link link link I have found the Navwar stuff to be of good quality. There have been a few casting issues, but nothing that really mars the view after they have been painted. I find them easy to paint, and quite affordable. The ranges are more comprehensive for Cold Wars era…. once you get into the 2000s, they seem to have less and less of the newest stuff. Chalfant |

Check out the Denian line too, since they are superb. You'll probably have to e-mail the proprietor for a list of models. |

I'vd got some Denian stuff and agree about the quality. I also have a lot of Navwar and am happy enough with it, but I was wondering how Skytrex compares. Given the price differential they are starting on the back foot nowadays. Chalfant – great pics! I especially like the Russians. |

Thanks, sorry I couldn't offer an opinion on the Skytrex (I didn't realize you already had Navwar). The Russian stuff looks better, probably because there are actual colors involved on the decks, as opposed to only shades of grey (???!!!) on the Chinese, or US, or just about everyone else's navies. Still, I think they turned out okay, I am very happy with them :) Chalfant |

They're all very inspiring. I've just ordered some fleet packs from Navwar – amazingly fast response – and am now wondering what shades of grey to use! I haven't been totally happy with any of my Revell or Humbrol colours but I've been looking at colour photos and am pleased to see that there are perceptible differences in the shades of the different navies so will rummage around in the paints I have to see what matches. Any tips? |

Oh, not really :) I'd just recommend painting on cardboard your palette set. Put down a "darker" grey, then the ligher grey that represents what you think it should be, then paint a few accent lines with an even lighter grey (for the hi lights)…. if it doesn't look right, adjust your palette. I mostly use Ceramcoat for everything. Chalfant |

Yep, bits of cardboard covered with loads of greys! Don't want to have to rely on mixing each time so want something out of the tin. Thought I had finally cracked it for modern Brits with Humbrol 127, but it looks too dark on the model :-( Back to the drawing board … |

White Ensign Models is probably the best source for different shades of gray, for different nations, and modern fleet vessels. |
