I'm looking for one, but good book describing the whole Vicksburg campaing. Plenty of maps would be an advantage. Any recommendations ? |

Pick up the book: Ninety-Eight Days: Geographers View Vicksburg Campaign by Warren E. Grabau. Good detailed maps. Nice view of the actions during the siege. |

Bearss' three volume set is pretty comprehensive: link |

Grabau's book is outstanding for wargaming the campaign. Bearss is excellent if you want the entire history. They worked together on Bearss' work. Grabau gives a unique perspective based on soil, geography and agriculture. His fortress maps are the best I have seen. |

I have Warren's book and can say it is one of the most detailed. the maps are, for the most part, excellent. My only hang-up with it is that he used all capitol letters to abbreviate military units, such as REGT, BDE, DIV, etc. it is rather jarring to be reading along and then come across the 1st BDE right in the middle of the sentence. There are many others that cover this seminal campaign. If I can manage tonight I'll post a list of them to this thread. Living in Mississippi and having a great-grandfather who was in the siege (helping defend the Stockade Redan during both attacks in May 1863), I'm keenly interested in that campaign. Jim |

A.A. Hoehling's Vicksburg: 47 Days of Siege, is a very good read. It's written as a collection of first hand accounts by the inhabitants as well as the military participants. No maps or OOB information, but good discussion of the conduct of the battle and its effects on the local populace. |

Hoehling is good for the siege, but doesn't cover the campaign to get there. A good overview is Receding Tide by Ed Bearss and J. Parker Hills. It has excellent maps. Older but good are The Web of Victory by Earl S. Miers and The Final Fortress by Samuel Carter III. For a good account of the maneuvering east of the Mississippi, see Champion Hill by Timothy B. Smith or my own Over the River. createspace.com/4745476 or link |

Yes, I meant dec'62-july'63. Thanks for lot of recomendations. I'll take a closer look on NInety Eight Days, but Bearss is, how to say … too expensive for me. So far I thought about Shea's Vicksburg Is the Key or Ballard's Vicksburg: The Campaign That Opened the Mississippi. I've got my copy of Champion Hill and it's really excellent. |

Smith's Champion Hill book is one of the best little books that hardly anyone knows about. |
