Dear All
It is pleasing that this book has been finally published. It quickly sold out in 2012. This has been enhanced by almost doubling the number of illustrations.

Excellent, I've been looking forward to this book!

summerfield22 Aug 2014 7:01 a.m. PST

I hope you will be pleased with the book. It is much clearer than the first book the changes in uniforms.

1. Waistcoats and turnback were maninly coloured up to 1760 then white. Most contemporary drawings date to 1762.
2. White metal and brass buttons and by 1762 mainly brass.
3. The uniform of the Grenz was far more complex than I had presented in the 1st Edition. This was due to the rotation of battalions every 6 month. Many of the Grenz bought their own uniforms rather than government supplied.
4. Flags of pre-1743, M1743 and the new flags were in use in the early 7YW. Even in 1768, there were old flags in use. This had not been realised by any of the English language authors.

I have been waiting for this for many months! To discover it has been revised and not just a reprint has made the wait worth it! On tuesday, I just ordered the SYW Prussian Infantry book and found a copy of your first edition Austrian Infantry at Caliver Books……and bought it! (Was told by others that this version would not be available till December…I needed a copy now for my project that has been on hold.)

Needless to say, by default, I am starting to become a quite willing collector of your body of work! Looks like I will have to save up again for this new version, too!

Thanks for your hard work and dedication to preserving the details right!

The Trotman site doesn't list the book yet. Any idea of when it will go on sale?

inverugie22 Aug 2014 12:43 p.m. PST

Sick as a dog to know I shelled out over £30.00 GBP ($50) for a publication that within 2 years is classed by the author as

'enhanced by almost doubling the number of illustrations', with the changes in uniforms.

Dear Augie
It is advertised on the site and is available now.

Strangely it is not in the 18th Century Section but in the uniform section.

This was my first book in the 7YW and I have learned a great deal in the last three years especially in layout allowing me to increase the number of illustrations. As I have said that it has been enhanced.

The first volume is correct and shows the uniforms in 1760-63 but does not explore the changes of uniform from the early Seven Years War.

Talk to Richard Brown of Ken Trotman about also having purchased the first edition. He has stated that he would likely be accomodating for his customers. Remember to ask politely.

The Prussian Fusiliers of the 7YW is now at the printers and should be available in October.

The Prussian Musketeers of the 7YW will be produced as a 2nd Edition but this will have only minor corrections. This is in effect a couple of flags needed revision. This will be available in April for Salute.

I am currently working on the Hanoverian Army of the 7YW.

We are sorry for the difficulties but the printer went bankrupt in late 2012 and we have had to find a new printer. This has taken over a year. Hence the disruption.

Right, that's pretty much a compulsory purchase. Done! :)

Inverugie, I have found this web site to be of use in the past.

"Satisfactory quality" and "fit for purpose" are terms to start with. I hope the site eases your pain.

Saw my publisher yesterday. Very pleased with the reproduction of the book especially that it is sewn in sections rather than double glued perfect bound like the previous books from the other printer. This means the book opens much better and the cover is squarer.

The colour swatches have come out as I wanted. Although there is a slight purple tint in the dark blue. This is as ever a problem with digital printing.

I realise how different the appearance is from the 1st addition with almost a doubling in the illustrations.

Mine arrived yesterday. Definitely worth the 2nd edition. Loads of extra info, especially all those excellent illustrations and very interesting measurements…!

:)

Cheers

I am very pleased. When you are so close to a book and doing the design as well. I had not realised until I had the book physically in the hand.

The Prussian Fusiliers of 7YW will be sent to printers tonight so I can finish the Hanoverian 7YW for Christmas for publishing in April.

I ordered my copy on August 26th from Ken Trotman and received it today. I was impressed with the excellent service provided by Mr. Brown of Ken Trotman books.

I originally purchased the first edition 2 years ago and was a little worried about the second just being an "update'. But after reading thru several chapters I found it to be well worth the price and a valued edition to my 7YW library. I was especially appreciative of the sections on the Hungarian and Grenz troops! In these sections depiction of the uniforms for different time periods gives the wargamer/collector the chance to paint several different uniforms for each regiment. This is also true for the sections on Austrian line infantry. but that information is not so hard to find. Also, the info on drummers and flags was very valuable.

BRAVO! Dr. Summerfield; excellent job on a much updated and enhanced second edition!

summerfield05 Sep 2014 2:54 a.m. PST

Dear Texan
Thank you for the comments. It had taken a number of years and the assistance of Dr Sissak to understand the evolution of the uniforms.

The Grenz is a more complex area as the different uniforms were used at the same time by the different battalions. The amount of variation within battalions would be expected to be large specially for those regiments where the soldiers still purchased their own uniforms. This gives considerable scope for the wargamer. I rarely found an illustration showing the same details unless it was a later drawing taken from the first.

The flags situation had always vexed me. I took the traditional line of giving the standard flag. It was again been given a translation of the decrees showing the error. Alas I cannot tell you who had what type of flag and when. It was only in the 1770s that infantry flags were standrdised as much as they ever were.

I only saw my copy on Tuesday and was very pleased. Always remember that Austria was short or money. The reduction in the use of dyed cloth was due to its expense.

The Prussian Fusiliers of 7YW is now at the printers. Expected for mid October.

Mr Voltaire14 Dec 2014 3:27 p.m. PST

I very much look forward to the Hanoverian book. I have an inkling that Mrs Voltaire may well supply a certain volume on either the Saxon or Prussian army to celebrate the birth of Christ. Or maybe I will get troop reinforcements and have to treat myself to the books…

Obsidian2309 Feb 2015 2:47 p.m. PST

Hi, sorry I am late to this party. I bought this book about a month ago along with its partner on Cavalry and artillery, I paid about $80 USD for them both including shipping to Canada.

Excellent book.

Purchased from On Military Matters in California.

The Hanoverian Army of the 7YW will be with the printers by the end of the week. It is 256 pages, 555 illustrations including all the infantry and cavalry flag/standards.

It actually covers the uniforms from 1727-1763 for the reign of George II to the end of 7YW.

I cannot wait to see it in print.

Mollinary23 Feb 2015 12:08 p.m. PST

Hi Stephen,

I look forward to the Hanoverian volume, and hope to be one of its first purchasers. I suppose I need to get a copy of the second edition of the Austrian infantry as well, although I cannot see myself adding to the ninety or so battalions I have in 15mm!

Mollinary

summerfield25 Feb 2015 2:32 p.m. PST

Dear Molinary
The 2nd edition of the Austrian Infantry is a considerable upgrade from the 1st edition. The evolution of the uniforms is clearly shown with the reduction in the use of coloured cloth. Certainly a way to cut costs.

The Hanoverian Volume is a feast of colour after writing on the Prussians and Austrians.

Great to hear from you.
Stephen
