I recently picked up some blue moon Plains Indians and troopers. I was curious as to how many people game this or find it interesting. I am planning on using the flame and the Tomahawk rules with some ideas from Yellow Ribbon thrown in for good measure. On a side note would GASLIGHT work for this?

I use 54mm toy soldiers – britains deetail, dsg from argentina, bmc, airfix for my plains wars battles.
I use paragon scenics cav and apache for southwest desert battles.

I game it in 15mm. I have two friends who do it in 25. Great period.

Bob in Edmonton21 Aug 2014 6:34 a.m. PST

i've got a bunch of troops for the Riel Rebellion in Canada with some options for a fictional Monroe Doctrine game. Not sure that quite counts.

Wackmole921 Aug 2014 6:40 a.m. PST

I Am working on 28mm Mountain men.

boy wundyr x21 Aug 2014 7:01 a.m. PST

I'm sort of like Bob in Edmonton, I have a Riel Rebellion project (skirmish) with RAFMs figs, and I've picked up some plains Indian figures as allies of the Metis. No US Army figures, other than a couple of scouts I'm going to call Metis to add some variety to the mounted Metis figures.

I really wish somebody, somewhere, would re-release Pony Wars. I think it's one of our hobby's great rules sets.

May I share? Probably my most painful hobby related memory is of my throwing a perfectly good copy of PW in…in the recycling bin (**snifBleeped text) during a fit of overzealous housecleaning. I still agonize over it.

So if somebody would get round to re-releasing it it would save me years of therapy. This is a cry for help!

We've done some games over the years ago using "Bugles, Boots, 'n Saddles" also by Larry Brom and 25/28mm figures.

I don't game but I love the period; in fact I just returned from a trip to Montana to visit the Little Bighorn battlefield… great experience. My Plains Indian collection is in 15mm and predates the release of the Blue Moon line which is excellent. My Indian figures are from Yellow Ribbon, Stone Mountain, and Minifig. The mounted Minifig are among the nicest 15s I've ever seen. My cavalry are Essex and Old Glory ACW figures. Like Wackmole9 I plan on doing a Mountain Men collection from from the Foundry figures. I have them collected but not painted as yet. You can see my painted 15s in diorama form at link

To answer your side note; yes, GASLIGHT would work for Plains Wars.

It works really well for Historical stuff we have found.

Not gaming now, but it is a project in the works, 25mm

kallman21 Aug 2014 8:00 a.m. PST

My big purchase at Historicon was a huge collection of Foundry 28 mm Plains War figures. As soon as I get them all painted I plan to use The Tomahawk and the Flame for the games I am going to run.

What is not to like about this period/genre? There is a ton of information available and heck it is Cowboys and Indians. Plus terrain is easy to build or purchase. Getting all these figures painted is probably my next big project. The other aspect about this period is it works well for either small skirmishes with on about a dozen or so figures up to some pretty large battles as in the Battle of Little Big Horn.

I switched from 15mm to Foundry 28's some years back. Rather than Indians vs cavalry we focus more on tribe on tribe reflecting our local tribes.

Gone Fishing21 Aug 2014 9:24 a.m. PST

Indian vs Indian sounds interesting. I read somewhere (I think it was an old Chris Peers article) that far more Indians died fighting each other than fighting the US. It made me think about an aspect of the Plains Wars I hadn't given much thought to before.

David Manley21 Aug 2014 9:24 a.m. PST

Gaming in 15mm. Either with a heavily modified version of Bolt Action or a home grown set.

abelp0121 Aug 2014 9:46 a.m. PST

I have a set of Pony Wars by Ian S. beck, that I would like to trade for some 15mm Afrika Korps & Desert Rats minis. The booklets in good shape and still has the QR sheet and Ammunition charts sheet, anyone interested?

Gone Fishing21 Aug 2014 9:57 a.m. PST

Abel01, I don't have any figures like that, but if you'd be happy with an old fashioned check or PayPal remuneration, I'm your man. PM me if interested.

I'm a huge fan of the period. I have a mix of 15mm figs. I have 12-14 fig companies. About 12. Plus a large number of Indians, pack mules, wagons plus other stuff. I use Yellow Ribbon and my own Pony Soldier rules. I like the Tomahawk and the Flame too.

Thanks,

John

I started this period in 2007 in 25mm.

I do 1860s using ACW figures. Sash and Sabre for cavalry, Old Glory for infantry, and Dixon for mounted infantry.

For 1870s, I use mostly Foundry for cavalry, and a mix of
Foundry and Artizan for infantry.

My Indians are mostly Foundry with some Old Glory. Many of the Indians are conversions.

The same Indians will work for both time periods. I use fewer firearms in the 60s for the Indians.

The two periods make very different games with infantry with muzzle loaders for most of the 60s.

I use my own rules I call Sioux Wars.

we use "Broken Arrow" for our 25mm figures

skippy000121 Aug 2014 11:36 a.m. PST

I want to use dinosaurs to eat the buffalo hunters that shot the buffaloes but those train whistles keep driving them off.

Tiger7321 Aug 2014 1:17 p.m. PST

I game the period with Blue Moon 18mm using Yellow Ribbon rules.

I want to but can't justify starting yet ANOTHER period when I haven't finished all the periods I've already started.

Early morning writer21 Aug 2014 9:03 p.m. PST

I may be the craziest of all in this period. Over 360 mounted warriors, two 'complete' cavalry regiments (okay, one regiment – guess which – and three other battalions that form an ad hoc regiment) plus a fort garrison, a few infantry companies roaming about, a remount herd, wagons and more. And a veritable plentitude of civilians and native villagers. And, of course, those gents in the white hats and their nemesis in the black hats. I have above 100 structures in my scratch building town (building, not built). Sadly, not much paint on that overwhelming mass of figures.

Allen5722 Aug 2014 6:18 a.m. PST

Love the period. Am playing with irregular 2mm figure blocks using home brew rules based on the C&C system. Little Big Horn went well. Custer lost but did not have to make a last stand. Thinking of converting to Odzial Osmy 3mm if I can figure out something that will work for mounted Sioux.

corporalpat22 Aug 2014 7:47 a.m. PST

Got the Blue Moon figures on the paint table right now! Probably going to use The Tomahawk and the Flame, or write my own.

boy wundyr x22 Aug 2014 7:50 a.m. PST

@Allen57 – assuming Magister Militum come out with opponents for their new 3mm Romans, there might be a bow-armed mounted figure in that for conversion.

I game the period in both 15 and 54mm. I am working with Hans Von Stockhausen , author of the Tomahawk and the Flame, on a scenario booklet for the period. We recently played White Bird Canyon from the Nez Pierce War. If you are interested in helping playtest the scenarios please send me a PM with your email.

Love the period, dying to get into it in 15mm, but so far I have never seen any painted armies or lots for sale. I grow most of my collections via second hand purchase and mainly here or at conventions. I've seen and bought dozens of periods including my main stays AWI and ACW, but never Pony Wars. If and when I come across something I will snap it up. I have about a dozen rule sets for the period just waiting for some figures to game with.

The battles and skirmishes are practically endless. Everything from the big ones like Little Big Horn to obscure practically unknown raids and clashes in remote outposts. I have a number of excellent source books for battles, including the two volume set Encyclopedia of Indian Wars Western Battles and Skirmishes 1850-1890, and Forgotten Fights Little Known Raids and Skirmishes of the Frontier 1823-1890, both by Gregory Michno. Hardcover, but over 400 pages long, and listing the details, oob, and campaign and battle history of hundreds and hundreds of engagements during the aforementioned period. A must have for those interested in gaming the Pony Wars.

Ojibwe-Dakota Wars on the early 18thC would be fun.

Bashytubits, I got a kick out of your post as I had posted on TMP several months ago a request for rules on this same subject. A buddy of mine has a nice collection of painted 25/28mm figs and we just needed a good and fun set of rules. Being that my all time favorite set is TSATF we naturally gravited to TTATF. We found the rules to be big fun and we're looking forward to running the most recent scenario we play tested at an upcoming HMGS South convention in Orlando Fl, Hurricon 2014, in late Sept. We are actually running (5) TSATF games and their variants that weekend and are now planning the 6th game, a TTATF game as noted.
