Toy Soldiers
Living History
Celebrity visitors*
All in the report on my blog Ancients on the Move/Bosworth Phil *Instantly recognisable to most Englishmen, the rest of the world might not know England Cricket legend Freddie Flintoff. Sorry about that – I was delighted to meet him and more than happy to talk him through some of the basics of late medieval warfare … |

Well that must have been a real thrill for you. |

I have to own up to not really being the star-struck type, Cyrus … but if I have to be ambushed by a celeb, then for it to be a proper sportsman (whom I do actually admire) is likely as good as it gets … I had a coffee with him and his crew later on (when I took my break from the stand) and he seemed like a genuine straightforward bloke … ! Great coverage, Phil! Fingers crossed for the TV show… |

Thanks everyone … Well … we have to take these things with a pinch of salt, cazador … You know what telly is like (they will probably play it for laughs if they can – if they use it at all) But there's an old saying about all publicity Phil |

"Well that must have been a real thrill for you." Surely you mean it was a great thrill for FREDDIE ? |

Indeed – I got the impression he doesn't get to discuss medieval weapons and tactics with the aid of a battlefield display of toy soldiers every day … Phil (54mm figures btw, mostly Irregular Miniatures, with the odd toy soldier type mixed in … flags and banners printed by 'fluttering flags' …) |

Were you on the right battlefield ;-D |

Were you on the right battlefield ;-D No, as Phil says in the report: "The first thing to say is that there was no battle on Ambion Hill: the Battlefield Trust's long overdue archaeological project to find the battlefield proves this conclusively (so any of the reconstructions based on outdated locations are not just misleading or hypothetical, they are just plain wrong*) … hills and rises play no part in the action." link |
Yesthatphil | 22 Aug 2014 6:59 a.m. PST |
Or yes depending on how you deploy your negatives The event is held at the visitor centre which is on Ambion Hill, about 2 miles or so from where the archaeology indicates conclusively that the battle was fought. Of course, as part of The Battlefields Trust presence, we were explaining and exploring the probable course of the battle at that accepted site just down the road (The Battlefields Trust being the organising agency behind the archaeological project to find the battlefield) … so, peculiarly, presenting the right battlefield (on the wrong battlefield)* Phil *the good news, of course is that within military/heritage circles, including LCC/the Visitor Centre, the location is not controversial – the evidence is not generally contested, and the location on Fenn Lane is accepted, allowing a much simplified narrative and great certainty over certain passages. Unfortunately many wargames publications have been rendered obsolete by this but remain in currency (and, perversely, there have been 'Ambion Hill' Bosworths at wargames shows just within the last year or so … ) … |
