"Ultramodern (2004-2014) Message Board For discussion of military events within the past 10 years, including ongoing operations." Wouldn't that be 11 years then? Dan PS. Also, what will the board be called next year, in 2015? |

Why not simply "Early 21st Century Board (2001-2020)"? Dan |

Be careful… |
MajorB | 20 Aug 2014 12:33 p.m. PST |
Why not simply "Early 21st Century Board (2001-2020)"? Forum rules state that anything within the last 10 years is banned (except on this particular board). If the board was renamed "The Last Ten Years" it wouldn't need to be renamed every year … |

Look at it 'fiscally' and there's nothing wrong. Year 1: 2004-2005 Year 2: 2005-2006 Year 3: 2006-2007 Year 4: 2007-2008 Year 5: 2008-2009 Year 6: 2009-2010 Year 7: 2010-2011 Year 8: 2011-2012 Year 9: 2012-2013 Year 10: 2013-2014 |

Fiscally? So, for example, from October 1st 2004 to October 1st 2014? Now I'm really confused! Dan |

I always thought of "ultramodern" as being from today until about 15 years from now, personally… |

Yep. Me too. But Modern should mean now or, at the very least, the last decade. I just can't call what my Dad and uncles did in WWII and Korea as "Modern" when it's already 5 or 6 decades old. Dan |

But Modern should mean now or, at the very least, the last decade. By my understanding, historians tend to consider anything post-medieval as being part of the modern era, with 16th to 18th centuries being considered as early modern period, and 19th century onwards as late(r) modern period. Recent events can be then referred to as contemporary or current. (And of course wargamers have the bad habit of inventing their own terms for various parts of history…) |

It's like starting a fast early and ending it late, just to be sure. |

Javelin. I would call that Near Future |

Honestly, Ultramodern should be something like in the last 5 minutes or so. Dan |
