Eric Fanning, undersecretary of the Air Force, told Washington, D.C.- based reporters in March that the service was sticking to its $550 USD million per aircraft estimate.

"We are still using that as a pretty firm chalk line for those companies that are bidding on it," he said. There are skeptics who believe the $550 USD million price is too low, and that the Air Force will not get the requirements out of the bomber that it needs, he said.

"This is keeping both the Air Force and the contractors pretty disciplined about what they put into the bomber," he said.

The price of $550 USD million per aircraft figure does not factor in the development costs, he said. He didn't know what the per-unit cost what be if the R&D was added, but it wouldn't double it, he said.
