Thousands of inexperienced Kurdish troops are being taught basic military skills while already serving on the front lines, Peshmerga officers have told FoxNews.com… link |

…the raw recruits are expected to buy their own. Gun markets are popping up in every village, as young soldiers arrive to buy, sell and trade every kind of weapon imaginable… Also mentions problems with organization and chain of command… |

…For now, the heaviest lifting on the front line is being done by a small batch of special forces and U.S.-trained counter terrorism groups. The veterans warned an embedded FoxNews.com reporter to stay away from the regular soldiers."They don't know what they're doing," one officer said. "They're likely to get you killed." I wonder if they mean Kurdish special forces, or is this a reference to the Iraqi special forces? What would a "counter-terrorism" unit look like? I'm surprised to hear it would be a significant combat unit. |

They are a few thousand determined men. History has shown again and again how much a charismatic leader with a few thousand loyal, determined men (plus many more militia type) can achieve. |

"Recruits expected to buy their own" – don't tell the Pentagon or Whitehall. They'll pinch the idea :) |

I can just imagine parades with weapons. "It's as if a thousand sergeant majors all cried out at once… " |

""Recruits expected to buy their own" – don't tell the Pentagon or Whitehall. They'll pinch the idea :)" Actually, wasn't this the norm for many armies throughout history? Or at least in the sense that they docked the cost of the kit of your pay? |

they mean Kurdish special forces, or is this a reference to the Iraqi special forces? As I have said, before, many in the region call their units "Commandos", are really in name only. And based on the ISF's recent past … IMO, this may pretty much be the case here … |

As they said in WWII, bring up the Crocodiles, let's see how fanatical they really are. This situation will only get worse/better (depending on your perspective) when the increased robotisation of the military continues apace and civilian populations become even more distant from their countries international deployments. Sigh Legion agree 100% link Terrorists, pure and simple. |
