Yes, I know, people generally hate the idea of new boards, but it appears to me that there really is no decent alternative to this one, under the General Boards listing.

The Scratch-building Board could be used for sharing pics of models that you've built from scratch, or tips, techniques, materials, etc. that are used to build them.

So, perhaps we should vote on this, if that is still being done.

I'm actually surprised that board doesn't exist already. I've seen several builds, but in other boards. This would be a nice one to have around.

The Tin Dictator19 Aug 2014 5:53 p.m. PST

What's wrong with the Terrain and Scenics board?

Its description says it covers commercial AND do-it-yourself terrain.

Coyotepunc and Hatshepsuut19 Aug 2014 6:04 p.m. PST

Yes please. More boards is always better.

Mako1119 Aug 2014 6:07 p.m. PST

Not everything falls into the Terrain and Scenics category, which I liken more to terrain boards, trees, hills, structures, etc.

I see vehicles and other items as being different, though I guess you could classify them as "scenics", if desired.

John the OFM19 Aug 2014 6:27 p.m. PST

Sure. Why not?

What's wrong with the Terrain and Scenics board?

I don't consider scratchbuilt predreds, aircraft and tanks to be scenics and terrain.

Yes, I would like such a board.

Yes, this would be a good idea.

J Womack 9419 Aug 2014 8:31 p.m. PST

First good new board idea in a year. Maybe two.

skippy000119 Aug 2014 9:07 p.m. PST

It should be scratchbuild & kitbash.

normsmith19 Aug 2014 10:08 p.m. PST

Sounds a good idea, but could it be labelled

'Terrain – scratch built'

That way, both terrain boards will sit next to each other in the index.

The existing board may need to be re-labelled 'terrain – commercial' otherwise there would be 100% cross posting.

tkdguy19 Aug 2014 11:26 p.m. PST

A scratch-building board sounds good. Vehicles aren't terrain, and a lot a scratch-built miniatures are vehicles.

I'm surprised we don't have a vehicles board, either.

… or do we ..?

Also, yes on scratch build

Generally, I'm mildly opposed to new boards but this one is the heart of our hobby. A collection of hints, techniques, ideas & suggestions would be great.

Texas Jack20 Aug 2014 4:21 a.m. PST

A big yes to the scratch built board, great idea!

Martin Rapier20 Aug 2014 4:23 a.m. PST

Explain to me how kit bashing, converting figures and making bits of terrain isn't already covered by the existing period/subject specific boards.

Modelling is at the core of our hobby.

@ Martin.

Of course you are correct but the new board would centralise the topic. I may not check out medieval boards because I'm not interested in the period so I'd miss any tips going there.

I'd also help the existence of such a board would inspire creative modellors to post their ideas & discoveries WITHY how to notes.

Karellian Knight20 Aug 2014 5:30 a.m. PST

Good idea, yes to the new board.

I agree on this one, I love to see decent scratchbuilt and kitbashed models – Black widow pilot's blog is very good for that kind of thing. I'd like to see what others can come up with.

I think it's a good idea…. So many times I get confused looking for one article in terrain and it's in scenics….

OSchmidt20 Aug 2014 7:43 a.m. PST

I do all my terrain and scenic as well as game booklets scratch built, and have been making scratch built ships and tanks and even minis for a while. But while I should love a board like this I dunno. It SOUNDS nice, but are there enough scratch builders out there to support it, and what's to prevent people from making it worthless by crossposting their 443rd refight of Stalingrad battle on it?

Just asking.

Explain to me how kit bashing, converting figures and making bits of terrain isn't already covered by the existing period/subject specific boards.

As far as conversions go, we have a conversions board. I post to it regularly and cross-post to the appropriate genre board. I like to skim down the conversion board itself for ideas. The techniques used for conversions are often independent of the genre of the figures being converted, so I can get lots of ideas and tips that apply across multiple genres.

I think this would be beneficial for scratchbuilding and kitbashing.

Alan Lauder20 Aug 2014 6:39 p.m. PST

I like the idea as well. My scratch building is terrain and buildings – but would be good to see all that's going on in one place.

I searched for a scratch building board when I first joined, so I would support a Scratch Building Board. Or even a Scratchbuilding Board.

Winston Smith21 Aug 2014 1:27 p.m. PST

New boards usually result in an increase of threads on the subject. That is a good thing.

Winston Smith21 Aug 2014 1:33 p.m. PST

…and what's to prevent people from making it worthless by crossposting their 443rd refight of Stalingrad battle on it?

Is that a serious objection or are you just being silly?
If you are serious, the same thing that prevents me from crossposting a Guilford Courthouse battle report to Needs More Boobies.
Common sense.

And what if this contains a few ideas on how to scratch build sewers or tractor factories?

OSchmidt22 Aug 2014 4:31 a.m. PST

Winston

Just saying.

As I noted I am a huge scratch builder myself.

Editor in Chief? What say you? Normally, I am opposed to any new boards, but this one actually has merits. I've built a few things from scratch, over the past 20+ years, but not a huge amount. Still, I would enjoy such a board, as I have belonged to a few scratch-built dedicated boards, and forums, already. I don't mind seeing this topic singled out on TMP, as it really does seem appropriate, and proper. Cheers!
