Morning all,
After the success of the last box to table feature I have done another guide this time for the unpopular (according to hits on't blog anyhow) WW2 Naval. Starting with base metal moving up to the ready to game piece.
I hope its of some use to the other three Naval gamers out there !

Is WW2 Naval unpopular? I think it's great fun myself.

Can't check your blog at the moment, I'm at work and personal blogs are blocked all the time, TMP is available at dinnertime.

Well my friend Charles and I enjoy it – and there's Cuchulainn, so all three accounted for then. grin

Thanks for taking the time to write this. It's great timing for me as I just bought some styrene to turn into bases for my 1/2400 ships. I was getting tired of turning them over for identification !

I'm thinking I will just paint them blue but you may have inspired me to try something a bit more involved. The thing is, I don't want this to become Yet Another Project and would rather just get it done. Roughly how long did it take you to 'sculpt' a base ?

I agree – the book you reference at the end is quite valuable for painting tips.

Nice tutorial! Thanks for sharing. I like WWII navel gaming so there's at least four of us.

Cheers Guys, I knew you were out there somewhere !

The unpopular theme is very much based on my blog stats, a WW2 Naval post usually gets a quarter of the hits a WW2 Land post would get and even less compared to the Empire of the Dead stuff I've done. Keep the faith brothers.

I love a bit of WW2 Naval and always come back to it, time and again, the 1941 Brits vs Japan campaign we did earlier this year worked really well and I'm putting together an early Med campaign.

CraigH – I have to say not a lot of time at all, I have just got some ships to increase the size of my Brits for the Med Campaign along with the Dutch fleet, the 57 ships took me a couple of hours to do the sea on and that was whilst watching television.

Because your trying to recreate a random sea surface thinking about it too much just causes problems ! I slap it on and then "smooth" it out using a penknife, then use the blunt edge of the knife to form the bow waves. First one will take a while but as you get used to it you should quickly get each ship down to under 5 mins. A bit of filler on the ship when painted just looks like a wave washing on the deck.

Good luck

Yankshire,

I have noticed the same thing on my blog. WW II land is the most popular followed by other "land" posts. WW II air and land are about 25% as you state.
I suspect it has to do with less modeling opportunities.

Cheers

Joe

At the very least naval gaming is typically less expensive than its land countepart…

And I nine.

I blog about poetry, music, and wargaming. (All my own work and mostly the latter.) Of my top ten posts, eight are on 1/2400 naval models after one fashion or another (including the top six) and two are about old Warhammer miniatures. The poetry and composition don't really register. (I think people are generally allergic to strings and music slow or not in 4/4.) Anyway, lovely post and well painted models. I think naval wargaming might possibly be on the upswing, so don't abandon hope.

Don't you find that by the time you've stuck the model onto a seascaped based that's deeper than the ships' hulls, they all look 1/ the same and 2/ not like ships?

yarkshire gamer21 Aug 2014 11:01 a.m. PST

Hi 4th Cuiras,

Is that a compliment on how good my painted dazzle camouflage on HMS Renown makes her dissappear into the background like the real thing ?

Not sure where you're going with the first part of your comment, I don't put the ship on a seascaped base, as you can see from the blog photos, the model goes on a blank base and I sculpt the sea round it.

I would be interested in hearing about your method of basing ships, I use card because its a) light weight, b) cheap, c) filler binds to it, d) it protects the model, e) its quick and easy to use. The rules we use need a base for turning circles.

I can only refer to the pic above regarding your later comment, to me the ships look like ships, in my geek like Naval gamer way I can tell what the ship is from a distance by its silhouette, its even easier with the name on the back. I do use different realistic colours for different navies, my US stuff is painted in MS21, my Italians have white/red bows and red/yellow lifeboats, which make different nationalities stick out on the table, so the short answer is no.
