I have been asked to paint some knights for John Hawkwood's Free Company. Any guides to what I should do? I am only vaguely familiar with the Free Company. |

I'm a medieval re-enact or and initially we styled ourselves as a free-booting merc company in the Wars of the Roses and as a cheeky name for our group we initially called ourselves the Creamy company. Well, when I say we, I mean me to off the group commander. |

Can't see the picture 20thmaine has sent … but … There is an illustration in Sercambi's chronicle for 1375, Hawkwood outside Florence. The banners are Hawkwood's familiar sable chevron with argent scallops (used both on trumpets and on flagpoles) and a simple (crossed keys and mitre) papal banner*. Phil Cooper, Sir John Hawkwood (facing page 81) – or, better - Stonor Saunders Hawkwood fig. 19 which also seems to show a plain yellow banner and men at arms in white harness with plain coloured jupons over. |

RC -- I'd be kind of interested in finding out a bit more about how the mercenary companies were organised -- I don't suppose you have any good references you could point at? |
