Hi,

could anyone suggest a Fantasy set of rules playable on a 90x90 cm (3'x 3') tabletop (max)?

Thanks a lot!!!

Hi!

Song Of Blades is great for small scale skirmishes and Bladestorm is also good if you can find it!

Princeps17 Aug 2014 9:37 a.m. PST

I would second Song of Blades and Heroes.

Ashokmarine17 Aug 2014 9:39 a.m. PST

Yep – Song of blades

Ditto: SOBAH is designed specifically for a small table.

A lot also depends on what size figures you plan to use, and whether you are looking for a skirmish set of rules, or a set for maneuvering full unit of troops.

Thanks Chris,

I'd like both.

Hi,
What scale are you playing (or are interested) in?
How detailed or abstract?
off the top of my head:
Ares
Avatars of War
Battlesystems Skirmish (AD&D)
Bushido
Chainmail
D&D Miniatures game
Fantasy Trip – Melee and Wizard
Helldorado
Malifaux
Mordheim
Ronin
SoBH
Warlord (nominally 4x4)

Thanks Scadian,

not so important.
The focus is on the table's size.

Mighty Armies would easily work.

Hordes of The Things (HoTT) the fantasy version of DBA would fit on that size table (25mm figures use 3 foot by 3 foot, 15mm or smaller use 2 foot by 2 foot)

Mighty Armies or HOTT in 15mm or even 25mm are perfect for a 3X3 table..

Kropotkin30317 Aug 2014 11:05 a.m. PST

x3 for HOTT. In 25/28mm there is plenty of room for whole armies to get around. In 15mm even more. It's a fast fun game and the building of armies quickly becomes an addiction.

Swordplay, free, works with any figures and made for card tables.

For playing with massed units on a 3x3 board, I'd lean towards 10mm or 15mm minis and Warmaster or one of the spin-offs.

War of the Ring would be another recommendation. I know it's a GW product, but I really like how heroes are important and can sway the tide of battle, but they aren't so powerful that they can rip an entire army apart all by themselves.

Lion, I think you meant GW's LoTR Strategy Battle Game.

It plays great on a 3x3 table. It is my favorite fantasy system at the moment.

Song of Blades and Heroes and some 15mm figures and you're set!

I'd adapt Bob Cordery's Portable Wargame rules from his Wargame Miscellany blog for battles between armies.

You may want to look at Freeblades too. It's a skirmish game that I've played several times and was designed for a 3x3 setup.

You could play with a smaller scale. This board is 60X60 cm. (DBA size):

Hordes of the Things and Fantasy Rules! for mass battle.

Osprey's Of Gods and Mortals for skirmish.

Mayhem mass fantasy battles, by Brent Spivey.

@Xintao: No, I meant the War of the Ring massed-unit game ( link ), where you put the individually-based LotR minis into sabots with ~8 infantry or 2 cavalry per sabot.

It's really quite a nice ruleset for small battles, shame it cost an arm and a leg new from GW. But you can find copies on Amazon for less.

I like it because it still allows heroes to affect the outcome, but they aren't the army-shredding monsters like in Warhammer.

Javier, What game are you playing on your board? It looks great.
