Why are new products released?

Have they been locked up somewhere?

Just a pet annoyance of mine, along with sneak peak and pro-painted.

New products are "released" because to "promulgate" them would be just wrong.

In the book industry, bookstore usually get books before the officially on sale date. Thus they have to hold them back and can only 'release' them to the general public on the official on sale date.

Keeping new products as slaves was deemed wrong. I think there was a war over it.

Um, because we say the same thing about movies, CDs, books, software, etc.? In other words, that's one meaning of the word.

They are "released" because they are kept on chains. When they are let loose (released), they go for your wallet. If you throw enough money at/to them, they calm down and even let you take them home, where they'll be your new best friend…. ;-)

Before I sell a product I have received and cataloged it. Then baggied for sale and then add it to the website. Then I can "release" it to the general public. It's been in existence for about a month or so prior to release, I think it's quite the appropriate word. But it's a slow day, perhaps I'm just bored.

What would you propose as an alternative?

It is a correct use of the word. As Extra Crispy said, it is a definition of the word.
