I've got hold of a bunch of plastic Squats (120+) and have decided to start an army. I am sculpting the arms for better posing and am converting the heads so that they don't all look the same (there are three different head styles and that is all). Here is a WIP pic of what I have done so far:
For more information (and pics of the character model), check out this post on my blog: link |

Evny your skills . The old fantasy army dwarves ( white plastic came with gobbos rats, etc) heads fit for some variety |

Here are some I did about 23 years ago.

Those look good :) I like the dulled down paint scheme… something I plan to do with mine once I get a few converted :). |

Thank you Insomniac. I have got some more but my boys have broken the arms of one or two, that need glueing back. These are all the old metal miniatures with plastic arms. I also added Milliput to the beards. Two have the heads from Squat bikers and I converted a couple of Chaos Squats by removing clawed arms etc. |

Here's the next update… I'm now up to 26 WIP squats with 2 actually finished:
there is all sorts going on with these: The helmet wearing troops are a single 25 Squat platoon (the 3 with berets will be in the next one) The specialists have been given armoured arms because their weapons get hot The command squad will have a lieutenant, medic, flamer and two close combat troopers The lieutenant has a power weapon made from a flamer, sprue and a Mantic hammer The Squats in 1 and 2 squad, with no weapons will have control of the heavy weapon platform For more information, pop along to Inso's World for the update: link |

I've only managed a small amount of progress this week… just the turbine on the bike:
The two robots are explained on my blog: link |

The first bot is finished:

I have finished the second servitor and have started to sculpt the engineseer (amongst other things) so please pop along to my blog to see the progress: link |

Cheers :) I've just updated the blog and the engineseer is coming along nicely, as is the hover buggy: link |

Scale pic of the new five-eights but also a bit of progress on the Engineseer again:

Insomniac | 21 Oct 2014 12:06 p.m. PST |
Further work on the Engineseer now that I've started to add some details to the arms… I am going for a 'metal-muscle' look to them (a bit like Colossus out of the X men). I've also started to tidy up the next little addition…
|
Insomniac | 26 Oct 2014 8:28 a.m. PST |
This week, I have used a bit of extra free time to work on the Engineseer. He only needs his head and back-pack sorting and he will be done. I have also added some arms to 'Big Robot' but they are only loose as I will need to remove them to work on the body areas:
As usual, there is more about the Engineseer and other things over at Inso's World (including a rather cool little quad bike that is perfect for 28mm use): link |
Insomniac | 28 Oct 2014 1:26 p.m. PST |
I reckon the Engineseer is finished:
I'll probably wait until Big Robot is finished before I put up a 'group hug' :) . |
Insomniac | 09 Nov 2014 12:55 p.m. PST |
I've managed to finish a couple of troopers (Flamer and Medic) from the command squad:

I am still ticking along with these… but have had a few distractions. Here's something for the Engineseer:
There's a little bit more info on my blog (including the distraction): link |

The Engineseer now has Big Robot to help him out:

An almost finished Infantry Platoon:
I am away from home at the moment so I don't have the heavy weapon tractors or a few backpacks to add to the loaders… but the platoon is finished apart from that :) |

You've done an amazing job on these, doing the Squats proud! -Will |
Insomniac | 13 Mar 2015 6:03 a.m. PST |
Cheers :) The full platoon, finished as far as I can:
When they get home, the heavy weapon tractors will be added. I will also add packs to the loaders and some sort of comms equipment to one member from each unit (command and each infantry squad). Then they will get some paint before I crack on with the next platoon. I am beginning to wish that I had brought more of them with me to convert as I have now run out and will have to make do with sculpting penguins :( |
Insomniac | 29 Apr 2015 1:56 p.m. PST |
Well I'm home now… and I've finished the infantry squads properly now:
|
Insomniac | 30 Apr 2015 7:10 a.m. PST |
I've been looking for Exo Armour proxies and think that Mantic's Forge Guard would make a good starter for conversions: link |
ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa | 30 Apr 2015 2:36 p.m. PST |
Who manufactures the 'gun tractors'? I couldn't see a mention on your blog. |

OK… while the beards are drying on the first infantry squad for the second Squat platoon… here's a 'pre-converted' Sentinel:
|
Insomniac | 17 May 2015 9:34 a.m. PST |
I've managed to get two Sentinels upto the same standard and all they need is the heads finishing. I have a third Vulkan Battlesuit on the way and when it arrives, I'll convert it to the same standard and then convert all the heads at the same time. These are pretty simple conversions so there is a pretty good chance that they should look pretty similar to each other:
|
Insomniac | 17 May 2015 9:36 a.m. PST |
The troops have been getting some work too but I have been asked to make a guide for them so I will only post pix once the first squad is finished. |
Weasel | 17 May 2015 10:24 a.m. PST |
Fantastic work, very nicely done. (and getting 120 squats is quite a find!) |
Insomniac | 17 May 2015 11:54 a.m. PST |
Cheers :) All 120 were through Ebay from many auctions :) It took a while but I am good at hoarding. |

Now I really LIKE what you're doing to that Bauhaus Vulkan suit… Leland R. Erickson Metal Express metal-express.net |

Hopefully, the finished product will maintain that enthusiasm :) |
Insomniac | 21 May 2015 10:58 a.m. PST |
I am really quite pleased how these are turning out. I have managed to get a hint of 'AT Votoms' in there… anyway, here are the almost finished Sentinels:
I only have minimal tidying to do and they are finished :) . |
Insomniac | 24 May 2015 3:37 a.m. PST |
So… what's next in the army? I completely forgot about a commander… so I threw one together:

I managed to get a look at the Codex Astra Militarum this week (what used to be the Imperial Guard) and discovered that the command squad troopers couldn't have bolt pistols… so I had to replace them with las pistols:
I have also updated the blog with much more information (including progress pic of the second platoon) so it may be worth a look: link |
Insomniac | 05 Jun 2015 9:33 a.m. PST |
I have been thinking about what to add to the army and since I got access to Codex Ministorum, I have had a few ideas… loads of text on my blog: link |

I managed to get a look at the Codex Astra Militarum this week (what used to be the Imperial Guard) and discovered that the command squad troopers couldn't have bolt pistols Don'y buy into what GW says they are Squats so they should have Bolt Pistols. |
Insomniac | 07 Jun 2015 10:00 a.m. PST |
The trouble is, these are counts as troops so I have to equip them accordingly. At least they will be playable (if I game with them) without having to argue about the legality of their equipment. This week, I have been busy getting the platoon up to a standard level… so now they all have a layer of putty on their arms, ready for the sculpting to begin:
… and for a change of pace, I have started work on a Gun Servitor for my Engineseer (this is the first of 2):
I still have lots to do but it's a start :) |
Insomniac | 14 Jun 2015 8:54 a.m. PST |
The gun-servitor is finished now:
I've started on the next one but I haven't got very far with it yet… theres info on Inso's World (amongst other things): link I've also began thinking about how I could include Psykers in the army without using Squats and I was given a good idea by a guy on Facebook… use beastmen. Obviously, I don't have any beast men because I don't collect fantasy… but I have some Tau plastics and some green stuff so I may end up putting together a few Primaris Psykers in the form of converted beastmen. I think it is really appropriate because they are another part of the Rogue Trader days that have been washed aside. Then of course… there are weirdvane psykers… but I'm not so sure I want any of those yet. So many things to think about :) . |
