"Imperial Assault is a strategy board game of tactical combat and missions for two to five players, offering two distinct games of battle and adventure in the Star Wars universe!
Imperial Assault puts you in the midst of the Galactic Civil War between the Rebel Alliance and the Galactic Empire after the destruction of the Death Star over Yavin 4. In this game, you and your friends can participate in two separate games. The campaign game pits the limitless troops and resources of the Galactic Empire against a crack team of elite Rebel operatives as they strive to break the Empire's hold on the galaxy, while the skirmish game invites you and a friend to muster strike teams and battle head-to-head over conflicting objectives"

FFG really wants to suck my wallet dry. I think they'll succeed (

So it's Descent with a Star Wars gloss.

I'm usually gung ho for all things Star Wars but this, for some reason, isn't all that appealing to me.

It would be nice to know figure size and if the figures are going to be painted.

If it is like Descent then the models are very nice sculpts but are unpainted. I would think they would be 28mm. That AT-ST looks really cool if not exactly to scale.

Interesting, I'll want to see some actual details on the game.

Looking forward to this, if just to play with the nephews… so long as the 'core set' has a strong replay value and is not just another intro into 'collectable expansions', looks like good value/casual gaming.

Also, just thought of this: when all the 'new StarWars' movies (groan) come out (and they might be okay…?)… whrer does that put FFG: lots of new material (or is that in their agreement?)… and how does that compete with the 'older stuff'… get it out now, then sell new items? ought to be interesting… the franchise that keeps on giving, but keeps on changing…

billthecat20 Aug 2014 10:58 a.m. PST

…and, just looking over this at 'BoardGameGeek'… "Squad-building and tournament style play."… I'm out.

…With the massive success of CCG style miniatures marketing (keep buying expansions to stay 'competitive' and play to win), I sometimes wonder about the direction of the 'gaming' hobby… has it gone pure tournament mentality? FFG may make a killing, but I (for one) can't stand the "gotta catch 'em all/stay competitive/power-gaming" approach to what used to be more focused on artistic creation and storytelling… more about killer-combos and sales then anything else. Ah well… Back to buying and playing products that encourage creativity and camaraderie instead of addiction and winning. Just IMHO, of course, the tournament mentality does have a massive following, of course.

Actually, I think that FFG does a pretty good job of keeping their games interesting for BOTH casual and tournament play. X-Wing is obviously tournament geared, BUT some of the best games I've played of it have been small-point games (ie, under the Tournament list size) or scenarios. So I think FFG does the best that it can to try to keep a foot in both communities.

That said, I DO think the 'all tournament, all the time' trend in more popular games is something that sucks the fun right out of a lot of those games for me. Other companies don't handle differing play styles nearly as well.

I enjoyed the WOTC Star Wars Miniatures boardgame, I think I played in 1 tournament and realized I didn't like tournament play so I just played scenarios and adapted the game to a more traditional "gridless" tabletop game, we had a great time playing it, and I probably should pull it out and give it a go again sometime.

Having said all that, I'm very much interested to see where this goes and how well does, what kind of expansions are "in the works"…we'll see I suppose.

I liked the WEG game and love playing Star Wars with Stargrunt II.
