…a Bad Idea.

"The battle against autonomous, robotic killing machines just got its first robotics company partner, as Canada-based Clearpath Robotics pledged its support to the international campaign calling for a ban on fully autonomous weaponized robots.

In a press release, Clearpath CTO and cofounder Ryan Gariepy explains why his company signed on to the Campaign To Stop Killer Robots—a multinational movement calling "for a pre-emptive and comprehensive ban on the development, production, and use of fully autonomous weapons, also known as lethal autonomous robots."

"This technology has the potential to kill indiscriminately and to proliferate rapidly; early prototypes already exist," Gariepy wrote. "Despite our continued involvement with Canadian and international military research and development, Clearpath Robotics believes that the development of killer robots is unwise, unethical, and should be banned on an international scale."…"

Isn't a mine or a booby trap a very dumb, non-cybernetic, immobile killer robot? We have enormous problems de-activating those after a war.

The idea of mobile robots with ranged weapons is scarier.

I'd prefer weapons to be entrusted to intelligence, on the whole.

And yet we give them to humans. grin

But will they be able to sing the 'Green berets' song during the credits.;) if so let it happen I'd rather be up against something that doesn't hate other humans but has reasoning that we are a bard sort.
Cheers and remember 'We are the Robots' by Kraftwerk.

Good thing not to! I cringe when trying to figure out how to program a computer to know what "Harm" is.

Remember V-1 rockets and homing torpedoes are all just robotic weapons too for example. Nothing new under the sun, robots have been killing us for a long time already.

30,000 people die every year in vehicle accidents in the US. Thanks to robotic technology developed by the military cars are becoming smarter and now have the ability to drive themselves far safer then a human and will only get better with the coming decade.

So robots can save thousands or maybe kill thousands. Maybe some day war will be so terrible only robots will wage it, saving thousands of lives.
