"The Navy is evaluating designs, costs and specifications for a new class of amphibious assault ships designed to replace the current fleet of cargo-carrying LSD 41/49 dock landing ships, service officials said. So, the Marines want every gator-freighter to have helo capabilities, and most of them to have well decks. Why not add roll-on/roll-off capabilities, too? As a somewhat-silly question, I wonder if a trimaran design like the USS Independence (LCS-2) would work. Might be a problem for the well deck, but it would sure make for a nice big helo deck! After all, the well deck needs to be wide enough to hold an LCAC, and LCACs are 47 feet wide. I'm pretty sure that the hull would need to be longer than the Independence, as LCACs are also 88 feet long and any LSD should be able to carry 4 LCACs. That makes for a 350ft long well deck, and the Indy is only 415 feet long! Gotta stretch the hull a good 100 feet for that to work out. |
