There should be either a semi-colon or a dash instead of the comma on the sign.

Yeah, sorry JJ, I'm not digging it either, at least in re: to understanding the exact message.

(I know the 1911 Colt reference, but how it applies and the very meaning of the poster itself escapes me…kinda glad of that fact too).

CraigH14 Aug 2014 8:53 a.m. PST

I was thinking Chinese Revolution – but still don't get it.

(edit) ahhh – thanks for the clarification

emckinney14 Aug 2014 9:08 a.m. PST

Terrement is … optimistic about the meaning of the slogan.

Col Durnford14 Aug 2014 9:19 a.m. PST

From the old Buck Rogers TV show:

[Buck picks up a squad support machine gun from the table]
Commander Corliss: You fool! That's an ancient signaling device!
Capt. William "Buck" Rogers: [fires a burst into the floor in front of Corliss] Get the message?

I doubt most people here could recognise M1911 even if you pushed it into their nostril. In general I doubt it is very well known in most places around the world.

For the real universal language that gets you understood everywhere, I would like to recommend one of these:

Much the same idea if you gestured at anyone around the world with a katana, cutlass, scimitar or whatever, they might not be able to identify what it was by name, but they'd certainly get the point.

GHAAAAK….!

(please tell me that pun was intentional)

Very droll! :-)

I would say that he has got sharp wits!

It's funny anyway you slice it.

Brian Bronson14 Aug 2014 11:22 a.m. PST

Very funny…you guys are real cut-ups…

Lion in the Stars14 Aug 2014 11:24 a.m. PST

I'm more fond of the 'Revelations 19:11' meme:

But yes, brandishing a bright shiny 1911 will get people's attention.

15th Hussar14 Aug 2014 11:26 a.m. PST

I'd rather posit that Helen Mirren bouncing around in sexy lingerie would pretty much get a greater result and a happier outcome!

Oy…

Actually, Our Friend Terrement might just possibly have reacted to what I'd call the "Romance" of the M19ll .45 Colt. In its time, it was almost the perfect hand weapon, an expression of "modern, civilized man-killing" in a world where battle was not an aberration but just a part of life like heat and storm.

Though, if it had been my idea for this "Inspirational" poster, I'd have shown a photo of the Original item, clean and presentable, but not hiding it's now century old origins.

I know, but Colonial and 19th Century war gamers tend to be Romantics in their way, and we get all warm and fuzzy in the presence of period weapons, uniforms, and Sophia Vergara….

Uh… uniforms, "Gunga Din," "The Man Who Would Be King," and Sophia ….

Sorry, the Dr. says it's time for my cold bath again.

I love the two tone series 70/80, first handgun i held.
Browning did it right the frist time, all others are pale imitations

raylev314 Aug 2014 4:09 p.m. PST

I like the bumper sticker that sez, ".45 cal, because needing two shots is just silly."

Henry Martini14 Aug 2014 4:47 p.m. PST

Actually, it should be a colon (meaning 'as follows').

I'm sure Helen Mirren was very attractive in the days of her youth, but…

Cerdic14 Aug 2014 4:50 p.m. PST

I don't think the poster really works. The slogan suggests an International aspect that just isn't there. The vast majority of people in Britain would look at that and see a couple of guns. Then they would wonder what happened in 1911 and what relevance the guns had.

I'm guessing that would also be the reaction in quite a lot of other countries as well. American gun culture is not common elsewhere and people do not have the same familiarity with guns.

The irony is we speak the same language and it still doesn't mean the same thing!

Last Hussar14 Aug 2014 6:01 p.m. PST

Violent home invasion.
It's like a smile – it means the same in every language.

Dynaman878914 Aug 2014 6:21 p.m. PST

> But yes, brandishing a bright shiny 1911 will get people's attention.

Maybe, but brandishing just about ANY pistol will get people's attention – even the pistols that many gun people scoff at. Frankly I don't think anyone scoffs when someone points a gun at them, regardless of make or model.

Doesn't Helen Mirren use one in RED?

Was Helen Mirren born in 1911? evil grin

Those are all cutting and slashing weapons, so your comment was pointless, really…evil grin

Scoff all you want about Ms. Mirren, but just Google search Helen Mirren Red Bikini…it's less than ten years old.

I guarantee you that a lot of 18 year old girls would be envious.

zoneofcontrol15 Aug 2014 3:28 p.m. PST

Helen Mirren: should have a colon.

Alan Lauder15 Aug 2014 3:48 p.m. PST

Agreed Andrew, that's motivational!

I've always liked this one (care of the Monday Knights):

"Those are all cutting and slashing weapons, so your comment was pointless, really…evil grin"

All these puns are putting me on edge--can we keep them down to a dull roar?
Then again, I might have an axe to grind.

B6GOBOS16 Aug 2014 5:43 a.m. PST

I guess I am not into this gun lust. But that red bikini is what I call motivational.

Mac163818 Aug 2014 5:09 a.m. PST

There are times I don't like living in Britain and this is not one of them.

Patrick Sexton Supporting Member of TMP18 Aug 2014 8:57 a.m. PST

Helen Mirren is still a very attractive woman.

And I am getting a Model 1911 for my birthday.

Charlie 1218 Aug 2014 7:51 p.m. PST

Helen Mirren in that red bikini is far more inspirational than a bog standard M1911A. Guess I'm just not into gun lust….

Mac163819 Aug 2014 3:27 a.m. PST

You know that Helen Mirren is a British left wing lovie.

deephorse19 Aug 2014 4:13 a.m. PST

So what?

jpattern219 Aug 2014 5:08 a.m. PST

One more reason to admire her work.

Cerdic19 Aug 2014 9:11 a.m. PST

Helen Mirren is brilliant. Just don't go drumming outside while she is working….

mashrewba19 Aug 2014 2:35 p.m. PST

Anyway never mind all this gun nonsense, I've got an actor friend who was in Red 2 and he said Helen Mirren is not only a mega babe but a really nice woman and a laugh to boot -and she killed him in the film…
Good -I'm glad I've managed to shoe horn this in somewhere.

Mac163820 Aug 2014 4:06 a.m. PST

I do not wish to speak for Dame Helen Mirren, I was just pointing out the fact that I don't think she would agree with the gun positive parts of this thread.

mashrewba20 Aug 2014 8:19 a.m. PST

Especially when you start linking it to Revelations -good grief!!
