I was thinking of purchasing "Raising the Clans: The Wargamer's Guide to Jacobite Britain" by Martin Hackett. Does anyone have this book and have any views about it? Rod |

I didn't think it was out yet (next week for me). That being said, I have his treatment on Dark Ages Britain "As Told in the Great Hall", which I think is A+ stuff. The Jacobite book is on my Amazon pre-order. |

Many thanks. I have now found one review, which is very positive, apart from criticising the fact that there is a small section about the modern Scottish Independence debate. link I think I will order it. Rod |

Now got my book, Raising the Clans. Only had time for a superficial glance so far, but the rules seem interesting, and far more compatible with my own ideas (prejudices) than most other "modern" rules. It can cope with different figure ratios (I like 1:30), units can be historical sizes (not forced to be all equal, or restricted in some artificial way), it counts actual number of figures firing or fighting, has simultaneous movement, casualty removal, and seems to be relatively simple to learn, with additional factors of weather etc for more complex games. All in all, it seems to suit my 1970s view of Wargaming. All I need to do now is to paint a few appropriate figures (a lot less than are needed for my Napoleonics). Rod |

Looking forward to getting mine… Amazon still has it listed as on pre-order with a 19 August ship date |

Well I ordered mine a few days ago through Hive, because they take UK National Book Tokens, and I had one given as a present which I wanted to use. Cheaper than Amazon, Waterstones or WH Smiths, none of whom take the tokens anyway. It arrived In a few days. To give you a flavour, it has 192 pages, most of which are a good summary of the whole history of the various Jacobite risings. The wargame section is 53 pages. There is a Playsheet, which can be photocopied, however I decided to re-type it as a pair of Excel spreadsheets (which is what the originals seemed to be anyway) and in doing so amended it a bit. The original Playsheet contained sections on Naval games and skirmish games, both of which I have cut out, but I have put in several other useful charts from the main rules. I probably have 20 books on the Jacobite Rebellion, or uniforms of that era, and am very happy to add this book to them. The next one I am awaiting is the full colour reprint of the "Cloathing Book 1742" which is currently being sold at a good discount (£48 reduced to £38.00 GBP until Monday 25 August) by the Naval and Military Press. Quick description: The uniforms of the whole British Army of 1742 in 94 superb colour plates. Reprint of an original and rare book commissioned by the Duke of Cumberland, victor of Culloden, and presented to King George II. Rod |

Rod, Thanks for the review. Still no change on the Amazon site, i.e., they are listing it as a pre-order. I really shouldn't be so anxious since this is a project I won't be starting for a while, but in the world of Amazon and online stores for miniatures, I have become accustomed to near instant gratification! When I think back to my earliest days in the hobby (early/mid 1970s) of sending for a catalog, waiting for it, the pouring over it, and the sending a check… well it took a long time. Now I start checking the mail after two or three days from the time I clicked the order button. |

Just got my "Cloathing Book 1742". Very nice, but expensive, and I probably would not have ordered it if I had not been given some money to buy books as a present. It will help me to get the correct patterns of cuff lace on the various regiments. Rod |
