Follow up of sorts from the last thread:

For people in countries big enough to do the war thing regularly, do you tend to play your own country in games?

If not, do you tend to play a specific other country?

Being Danish, this obviously isn't a case for me though I would play Danes wherever possible since it's so rare :)

Boondock Saint11 Aug 2014 10:06 a.m. PST

I always buy both sides for every conflict I game, but one of the conflicts I return to most often is the Rhodesian Bush War (which I have collections for in 15mm and 28mm), and that is a conflict my father fought in. Of course, by the time I was born it was already Zimbabwe, and I haven't lived there in many years.

Battle Phlox11 Aug 2014 10:07 a.m. PST

I'm a big WWII player but I often play British, Soviet, or Japanese if in the Pacific theater.

jurgenation Supporting Member of TMP11 Aug 2014 10:09 a.m. PST

yes I will play german a lot,but the most underdog or weird army I want to play it,give me your scum, and I will attack.

John the OFM11 Aug 2014 10:20 a.m. PST

I pint both sides for American Revolution, but will play either.
In WW2, I paint and play Americans, British and Soviets.

those are the only periods I play with Yanks involved.

Rrobbyrobot11 Aug 2014 10:31 a.m. PST

I'll play Confederates for ACW games. I'm getting ready to start collecting Americans for WW2 in North Africa and Italy. I just sold my 28mm Americans for Bolt Action as I have so many other troops. Would've been my fourth force for that game.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP11 Aug 2014 10:37 a.m. PST

I always build both sides simply because I love to paint and I always want to be ready to play a game without wondering if the guy who is suppose to bring "X" troops will show up or not. However, In the AWI I do like playing the Americans because they are usually the underdogs and in the ACW I love to play the Rebels just for the fact that they are rebelling.

Pijlie11 Aug 2014 10:45 a.m. PST

What a novel idea! Exclusively playing the Netherlands would certainly put a stop to the leadpile…. :)

jameshammyhamilton11 Aug 2014 10:47 a.m. PST

Nope, well almost not.

I think the only English armies I have the models for are Feudal English or 100 years war but I have never fielded them as that.

The closest to an English army I have used in the last 35 years is Medieval Welsh. I did field a British 6th Armoured division force back in the 70s but that is long gone.

Zargon11 Aug 2014 10:48 a.m. PST

Yes I play The BullBleeped texttys quite often :+) as for the country of my nationality not often and I do tend to go for the underdogs who fight with gritty determination, not (woe to me with no 6s in site :)

boy wundyr x11 Aug 2014 10:49 a.m. PST

If there's an opportunity, I always add a Canadian force to my collection – air and land for WWII and modern what-if, and then there's the Riel Rebellion.

OSchmidt11 Aug 2014 10:50 a.m. PST

Dear Weasel

Of course. But remember, I do almost exclusively Imagi-Natons, so of course I play Saxe Burlap und Schleswig Beerstein in the 18th century, Electorial Swinnland in the Renaissance, and in the modern era it's Bandrika, versus Fahrvergnuggen.

Dynaman878911 Aug 2014 11:12 a.m. PST

No. Although naturally more interested in conflicts my country has been involved in I do not make any effort to play "my" side in a game.

Weasel11 Aug 2014 11:20 a.m. PST

I do tend to lean towards whichever side lost. More interesting that way I suppose.

Pictors Studio11 Aug 2014 11:27 a.m. PST

There are sides I typically like in a conflict but will play either side. I'd rather not play the Germans in WWII but that is okay because most of my opponents would usually much rather play them. I will still play them if nobody wants to.

I often find myself buying lots of British armies for periods that I'm into but that is because I have to buy both sides. Still I suppose there is a bias towards British history that shows up on my wargaming tables.

Porthos11 Aug 2014 11:34 a.m. PST

Oh Pijlie… what sites (and leadpiles !!) I could show you… (;-)))))

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP11 Aug 2014 11:40 a.m. PST

If I could, I would!
Most of my opponents bag the Brits first, so I am left with getting the opposition! Sigh!

Griefbringer11 Aug 2014 12:12 p.m. PST

I don't think I have ever played in a game where my country would have been on either side.

That said, I am aware of other people around here doing that, but personally I am more interested in a bit more exotic (for me) settings.

brass111 Aug 2014 12:17 p.m. PST

I will play pretty much anybody if someone else is providing the miniatures, but my own armies tend to be British or British colonials (Anzacs for WWI, Canadians for WWIW). Of course, for some periods, e.g. War of 1812, I end up providing the armies for both sides.

snodipous11 Aug 2014 12:31 p.m. PST

I'll play either side. Games, for me, are about making interesting and difficult choices, not about role-playing or otherwise taking on the character of the side I'm playing. I am Canadian and I have Canadian forces for WW2 and moderns, but I also have Hitler Youth and Taliban, and I'm happy to play either side.

haywire11 Aug 2014 12:31 p.m. PST

I usually play the "enemy".

Personal logo Extra Crispy Sponsoring Member of TMP11 Aug 2014 1:19 p.m. PST

Nah, I'll play whatever side needs players…

Personal logo etotheipi Sponsoring Member of TMP11 Aug 2014 2:35 p.m. PST

Nerp.

raylev311 Aug 2014 3:11 p.m. PST

Depends…although, as an American, two of my favorite periods tend to make the decision for me -- the Napoleonic Wars and the American Civil War.

bobm195911 Aug 2014 3:15 p.m. PST

No. Not entirely sure why. Tend towards underdogs and the Brits are often the winners…or at least favourites so that may be at least part of the reason.

Cosmic Reset11 Aug 2014 3:46 p.m. PST

No, where US forces are available, I usually end up picking another force to build and play.

epturner11 Aug 2014 4:07 p.m. PST

For the FIW, AWI, and the War of 1812, I'm more apt to play either side.

Anything else is crap shoot.

Indecision may or may not be my problem…

Just saying.

Peace Man11 Aug 2014 4:30 p.m. PST

I tend to collect both sides of a conflict and will happily play as either, whether that's my own country or not I don't really mind

Sundance11 Aug 2014 5:12 p.m. PST

I'll play whatever, whenever. Doesn't matter which side.

rvandusen Supporting Member of TMP12 Aug 2014 3:08 a.m. PST

I always collect and paint both sides, but recently I've been drifting into the early history of the United States (and before) again – roughly the FIW through the Mexican War, so in that case I have my fellow countryman on one side or the other.

Thomas Nissvik12 Aug 2014 3:16 a.m. PST

Being a Swede I would be limited to wars 200+ years ago. I will however run an Antietam game some day with the 20th NY under the command of a Swede. link

frostydog12 Aug 2014 4:54 a.m. PST

No, Australians were a bit thin on the ground during the Napoleonic Wars or for that matter the AWI, ECW, Crusades or ACW.

I don't even game them for WW1 or WW2 mainly to avoid the stereotypes.

Pete Melvin12 Aug 2014 7:34 a.m. PST

I try to avoid playing Scots in anything. Our history is so bloody depressing.

GatorDave Supporting Member of TMP12 Aug 2014 9:52 a.m. PST

Somehow I almost always end up collecting and playing Russians. 7 Years War, Naps, WW I, WW II, and Cold war. I have multiple sides in some cases but one of them is always Russian….

Duc de Limbourg12 Aug 2014 10:05 a.m. PST

I wish i could play moe dutch troops or armies but there is a lack of good dutch figures in most periods

arthur181512 Aug 2014 1:39 p.m. PST

Yes – when I'm playing English Civil War!

Howler12 Aug 2014 9:14 p.m. PST

Yes. I play US in WWII games and Confederates in Civil War games.

Oddball13 Aug 2014 7:55 a.m. PST

Any side, anywhere, usually any period.

Rudysnelson15 Aug 2014 8:52 a.m. PST

Any country,

138SquadronRAF15 Aug 2014 8:04 p.m. PST

Well last year was the first time in 42 years of gaming that I finished painting an English army in any period and 40% of that was Portugese.

Landgraft17 Aug 2014 7:21 p.m. PST

Personally I'm quite proud of never having owned, painted or even considered an Australian force. That's mainly just because of the endless jingoism about the ADF that I've been exposed to all my life.

Jubilation T Cornpone26 Aug 2014 8:55 a.m. PST

Pete,

I tend to build up Scots armies as I find your history stirring, compelling and romantic!

BW195926 Aug 2014 5:58 p.m. PST

Would prefer to, and have Union ACW and US WW2. But also have to build both sides so also have Reb ACW and German WW2. I learned long ago as gamers have come and gone to always have an opponent army and think most gamers do too.

Clays Russians31 Aug 2014 7:56 a.m. PST

Perryville is 70 minutes away. But alas, no pre 1900 Russian regiments there. Gator Dave, I feel that way. You oughta give the Crimean War a shot
