Could the 20mm be used in the AA role? What did the dummy gun on an observation PZIII most resemble-IIIL,IIIG, III flamm? Thanks. |

As I understand it, the 20mm on the SdKfz222 was on a high elevation mount, virtually 90 degrees, but it's in a hand cranked turret and didn't have the range finders and so on that a dedicated AA gun had. You could fire it at aircraft but it's not going to be nearly as accurate as a 'real' AA gun. The dummy gun on a Panzerbeobachtungswagen III looks like a broom-handle as much as anything. It's also offset to the right(from the vehicles POV). |

There are plenty of photos showing the Sdkfz 222's gun elevated to angles as much as 80 degrees. The mesh roof was designed to split precisely to allow high elevation. However, as has been said, the weapon lacked dedicated AA sights. |

The crew set-up could also affect the reloading speed of the gun, compared to a proper AA-gun set-up where you have a couple of crew members feeding in new ammo as fast as possible. |

Thanks, I just heard of people using it that way in games, didn't seem quite doctrinal though. |
