After watching Episode 1 of "Our World War" on BBC Three this evening, found Edmond's Military Operations – France and Belgium 1914, online. Thought It might prove to be useful: 1914ancien.free.fr/edmonds.htm Includes some really detailed maps within the chapters. Cheers Mark |

Good stuff about the overall situation. Corps and Divisions. Wish there were regimental or smaller histories. If the Germans had not invaded Belgium, would the United Kingdom still have gotten into the war? What was the German war aim vis a vis France? It seems the German major objective was to fight Russia to protect its ally Austria-Hungary while that country "punished" Serbia. |

Bobgnar Not long ago there was a TMP post showing evidence that came to light recently about King George V telling the British government to find whatever excuse it could to ensure that Britain went to war with Germany. TMP link |

Howdy, Only seems fair to note, the British Official History was written as patriotic propaganda. This documented by Martin Samuels in "Command or Control." Work on preparation of the real history was stopped by WW2 and never restarted. Ponder on, JAS

Sorry but the British Official History was not written as patriotic propaganda. It was a huge effort that collated a massive amount of input from participants at all levels in the various battles. The material was very extensive but it was almost entirely British (there is some material from German primary sources). The German and French official histories are similar. All three tend to play up victories, play down defeats, and provide a very national bias. The BOH should not be used as a definitive view of the war. Nor should the equivalent materials from other nations. All perspectives must be combined together to get a more balanced view. Martin Samuels book on Command or Control has to be read with great caution. Robert |
