I am about to start constructing my Bavarian Heavy cavalry for the Blenheim period. Some sources say the Kuirassier regiments used the lobster helmet, others the Tricorn, at least in the west. Which is the most accurate? |

I am pretty sure Lobster helmet. Even if that's wrong…it looks cooler. |

de la Colonie in his memoirs writes; I put to the test at this battle a small frame of well-tempered iron, which the cavalry officers, not in the cuirassiers, were in the habit of placing in the crown of their hats. It certainly saved me from the effect of two heavy sabre cuts which I received in the melee to the extent that I got off with merely a few bruises. I would take the implication from this that the cuirassiers had no need of the protection as they wore helmets. The battle in question was near a village called Heyzempirne in southern Bavaria 3rd March 1703. |

Austrian and Bavarian Kurassiere wore helmets due to the heavy close quarters fighting they did against the Turks earlier. As far as I know they retained the helmets throughout the War of Spanish Succession. |

Bear in mind that the Bavarian cuirassiers were disbanded soon after Blenheim, and incorporated into a single regiment of Carabiniers, which wore normal coats and tricornes and no body armour or helmets. |
