Do know specifics, but I believe they were relatively low – a few thousand feet perhaps. |

In 39 against the Japanese SBs went to bombing at over 22,000 feet to avoid Ki-27s don't know if their experience filtered through to Western MDs |

The Pe-8's which carried out the first "strategic", read propaganda, raids on Berlin went in at about 23,000ft. These of course were not your normal Soviet tactical raids, which, from what I have read, went in at about 12,000 to 15,000ft. I doubt if many Soviet bombers climbed, never mind bombed from, above 25,000ft. Fatman |

Oxygen was an issue, many raids were under 15,000 for that reason. Same with fighter operations. Germans were almost always able to be above the Russian aircraft and make attacks from higher altitudes. |

SB-2 – 7,800 m Il-4- 9.700 Pe-2 – 8.700 Tu-2 – 9,500m These altitudes are "practical" altitudes, i.e where they could operate without special pilot training or upgrades. |

Soviet fighters were optimized to fly at 10,000 feet or lower. Il-2's would fly at about 1,500 feet and then shallow glide to strafe and bomb at very low altitude. Pe-2's would fly at about 10,000 feet if they were dive bombing. |
