I've been working on this river for months, and still need to build its cousin the Kabul River, one for each flank of the table for my refight of the October 6th, 1879 Battle of Charasiab from the Second Anglo-Afghan War.

I'm still not done, but I hit a point where I think they're actually starting to look good, and wanted to share, so here's a sneak peek of the "Sneak Peek" post I just put up on my Maiwand Day blog…

Good looking terrain. The colours are very vivid & speak accurately of the harsh nature of the place.

Very nicely done. Will your terrain for Charasiab end up being 10 feet or 12 feet long with the rivers added on each end?

Thanks guys.

Rhingyll, the table will be 12' x 6', with a river running along each of the 6' sides. The Kabul River will be built on a single 6' x 2' board, unlike the Logar River above, which is on two interconnecting 2' x 2' boards. The Rivers will run along the East and West edges of the battlefield, the Afghans will occupy the hills on the North edge, and the British will enter from the South edge.

When I'm all done, and with the addition of one or two more 2' square river sections, I'll be able lay out a continuous river up to 12' long, which I'll do to refight the Battle of Kandahar/Baba Wali, where the Afghan army fought with their backs against the Arghandab River.

All is well when you can plan ahead to reuse landscape features. Based on what I have seen you should be able to fight Kandahar/Baba Wali immediately after Charasiab without making anymore terrain.

Agreed, Rhingyll. All of the rocky wood-chip hills and low sandy hills I've built for my Charasiab terrain lay-out over the past 2 years are individual pieces that can be reused in endless combinations

Choosing to build these rivers the same way has entailed a great deall of additional time and effort, but hopefully after it's all done it will prove to worth it, since I'll be able to rearrange the river(s) for various different scenarios, both historical -- like the Battle of Kandahar/Baba Wali -- and made-up.

Cool – pls post pictures of the first battle when playing on the finished terrain.
