The Navy has replaced two 57mm guns planned on the Zumwalt-class guided missile destroyer designed to fight off swarm boat attacks with a smaller pair of 30mm guns, Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) told USNI News on Monday… link |

??? Smaller gun, lower rate of fire, only 1/3 the range and unlike the original choice made by a different company than produces all the other heavy weaponry on the vessel. Seems like a typically (il)logical decision. |

The saales man who pushed the 30mm guns brought better hookers than his competitors , that is how the deal was signed . |

ROF is not really an issue (220 vs 200). Weight considerations is nothing to laugh at aboard ship. Also has twice the magazine capacity (not sure about how reloading is handled). Also, given the purpose (small boat swarm), that the range is a big deal, either. But going with the 30mm does make it only an anti-swarm weapon, and not much use against anything larger. |

There was a push by some folks to "up-gun" the firepower on the Spruance class destroyers, going from a 5"54cal to an 8" gun mount. Argument was that it was greater firepower and longer range. Actually the eight inch was to provide shore bombardment replacement for all the old cruisers, and Iowa's, that were gone. Politics killed it. Would it has been useful? Ask the Marines, but the current projections are that it's not possible to stand offshore and shoot. Thus LCACs that are fast enough to allow the amphibs to lie far enough away to survive. |
