We've all been there, right? I know I have, I'm actually pretty famous for it. Share some of your horror stories. Maybe sharing each other's pain will make us all feel better. :)

I'll start. Although I have perhaps thousands of such incidents over the years, here's one I fondly remember:

Playing old school Battletech back in the Fasa days. Just a few turns into a new game, I had my mighty Atlas standing proudly on the edge overlooking a deep ravine. He was clean, fully loaded with no damage whatsoever. He sees some puny Mech on the other side of the ravine. "Easy pickins", he thought. Puny Mech shoots first and hits Mighty Atlas, causing enough damage for Mighty Atlas to lose control and force the pilot to eject. Pilot fails his landing roll and dies on the spot.

Oh, almost forgot. To add insult to injury, my gaming "buddies" thought it was even funnier to keep wasting ammo shooting out the edge of the cliff face under which Mighty Atlas stood. A few rounds later they all had a hearty belly laugh as they watched Mighty Atlas fall head first into said ravine exploding into tiny bits when he hit bottom. Gee, thanks….

Aged for ten years, yet still timeless …

I had the dice of invulnerability once. While we were playing a girl I wanted to talk to came in to the commons room and joined a group that was starting up another game (Vampire, if I recall correctly), so I decided to stand and confront the orcs that were pursuing us. My dice just would not let me die a heroic death of self-sacrifice allowing my comrades in arms (escaping with the Eye of Grummish gem) to get away. I killed them all (maybe, 30?), only taking three or four hits (starting with about 15 of 20) and saving against poison arrows (what seemed like) a dozen times.

This happens an inordinate amount of the time: I will roll up on somebody's "dead six" at pointblank range in my WW1 aeroplane, and roll "snake eyes". It happened again just last week, with insult to injury resulting in jammed guns as an added bonus….

Two different games

The first – my Shadowsword lines up the Chaoes Scout Titan, "Fire!" – and with a series of lucky die rolls catastrophic damage takes it out, first turn it stalked on the game board

The second – my Prussian heavy cavalry brigade are all lined up to deal out the pain, a dice roll -"someone has blundered" – and off the table they go for the next 3 moves – to cover the retreat of what was left of my infantry (and it wasn't much)

Never say: "You need anything except a 1" for any die of any number of sides.

First shot, first turn of the game (ACW's). I move a division of Confederate infantry on to the board. One brigade takes one shot of artillery, no casualties, but routs right back off the board. Of course, I made every single morale roll for the rest of the game. Literally, it was as though that one poor brigade took all my bad luck with it.

Game of AK47 Republic…I'm running Elite European troops….

turn 1….troops move into position in carriers….Enemy fires a mortar at them…misses….Due to it being a RFCM thing for "mortars", I have to roll a morale check…

Anything but a 1….

I roll a 1…..

Roll 2…unit disembarks from carrier….out of direct weapons range….

Enemy fires a mortar at them…misses….Due to it being a RFCM thing for "mortars", I have to roll a morale check…

Anything but a 1….

I roll a 1…..

GM looks at me and says "Dude!"….

Turn #3….

I try to move my men back into the troop carrier….

Enemy fires a mortar at them…misses….Due to it being a RFCM thing for "mortars", I have to roll a morale check…

Anything but a 1….

I roll a 1…..

Elite Unit routs off the board….

Game over essentially….

Three rounds…three shots…no hits…no casualties….game over…..

GM was muttering that "it took him longer to set the table up than it did to run the game, and for me to ruin it…."

So many stories… My worst, though, was in a game of W40K. I had a nice Grey Knights force, my HQ was a Great Master and his escort of 5 Terminators. My oponent shoot at them with a Basilisk: S8 AP3. He hit. He wounded all of them. I needed 2+ in 6d6 to save my Termies and the GM. Easy, don't you think? Roll the die, and yes, 6 1s. All of them dead.

By the way, I won the game… with my Inquisitor and her retinue. She killed everything in her path, the angry bitch!

53Punisher, First time I ran an Atlas (freshly painted solid black with an orange head like a pumpkin) turn one, I move line up for my shot, miss. Next player moves, shoots, hits. Head shot with a PPC

I have played Pony Wars only once.

The way the Ref ran it was the settlers only had a small (random) amount of ammo. And the standing policy was that death was better than capture by the Indians.

So I had this waggon train trying to make it into town and they get ambushed by a large band of Indians. I rolled and got a pathetic amount of ammo so I shot all the women and children to save them from a Fate Worst Than Death and fired off what was left at the Indians.

Then I rolled ridiculously well – I can't remember if it was 00 on the D100 or 01. The result was that I actually killed somebody!

So then the Ref had me roll the Indians reaction/morale (because it was a chief, I think). I rolled the absolute worst result (again a "1" or "00").

At which point all the Indians ran away…

Saber6, my Atlas had it's head painted orange like a pumpkin too! I guess the lesson here is never field an Atlas with an orange head. Must be some kind of weird curse or something about that head color. :)

Emperor Claudius II07 Aug 2014 2:37 a.m. PST

Game of DBM nineteen years ago. Surrounded my opponent James's General on three sides. He had to roll three sixes, and I had to roll more than one three times. Did I? No. I rolled three ones, and yes, he rolled three sixes.

Adaptation of ironclads boardgame for miniature ACW naval.long nice looking set up. lots of talk about sizes and details of 1/1200th ships 9 the others being modellers).
River scenario, confederate ironclad and one small wooden ship against motley bunch of wooden yankee ships.most very weak.

1st turn my bow 30lb rifle (for those who don't play, in the context almost a pea shooter) fire far away.
6 hit
double 6 critical
6 in boiler
6 expodes
6 ironclad sinks
game over.

also some DBm
Mongol ambush vs big khazar army. kills wandering khazar general, tests main corps who flees. lets do another one.

In old days,3 days in Manchester warcon, I think.
1day and night train to reach
one day setting up, sorting out the troops…Empire rules.
innocent in the center has this little move in front of Nansouty.
The cuirassiers smash an Austrian division in opportunity charge. two divisional tests near by with a few% and rout. end of game, no more center.

another;
campaign play:
two divisions of Russians fleeing in disorder; Murat has several cavalry brigades that can smash them; only needs less than 95% chances foe EACH.
No dice rolls under 96; 5 of them.

Game of 40k many years ago, my Guard v Tyranids. First 5 turns were a bloodbath with both sides ripping each other to peices.

6th turn and only two models are still standing: my Guard captain (armed with Bolt pistol and a stick) is facing off against the uparmed Hive Tryant.

Dragging his enourmous balls with him he advanced on the giant gribbly thing and fires off his pistol needing a 6 to wound, and 2+ to save, the Tyrant roared in pain as the shot penetrated his carapace. Our fearless hero charged home ducking and weaving his way through the beasties thrashing claws and talons (i.e the tyrant fumbled all his attacks) and proceeded to deck the baffled monster with his swagger stick. 5 attacks, 5 hits, 3 wounds on 6's and 3 failed saves of 2+ later and the overgrown beetle dies of astonishment…

In a GASLIGHT game I had an ATAT Walker in roughly HO scale. I made it a Uhlan spar torpedo. I charged an action figure scale ATAT Walker making ally rolls for the driver and lancer. I blew out his knee!
Success!!
Well…
The critical hit table results would have gladdened my heart of they were for ranged shots. He collapsed on top of me.
