"US cargo ship USNS PFC Dewayne T. Williams is expected to arrive in the small Norwegian village of Namdalseid on August 10, bringing heavy tanks, armored personnel carriers and landing crafts, the local Adresseavisen newspaper reported on Tuesday. The cargo will include third-generation main battle tanks of the M1A1 Abrams type. This new, heavier equipment will replace trucks and personnel carriers which were previously stored in the mountain bunkers of Central Norway. Local defense sources, cited by the Norwegian Aftenposten newspaper, say that the US' decision to change war equipment stored in Norway was made on the basis of experiences from Iraq and Afghanistan…" Full article here link Amicalement Armand |

So in other words, they got rid of the European POMCUS sites and are now storing stuff in Norway…. |

No, this is replacing the kit that was already stored there. |

So in other words, they got rid of the European POMCUS sites and are now storing stuff in Norway…. They need to be close to protect the doomsday seed vault. |

That seems to be a very logical place to store stuff for use in Ukraine. |

Yea, that and someone wanting an armored division, or three, for free, assuming they've got the men and transports to move them. |

I can just picture the archaeologists 10,000 years from now as they excavate the tomb of the Great Emperor with his chariots and other escorts to the afterlife. |

Didn't realize the US still had M1A1s, I think even my local National Guard tankers are all in A2s! |

Could be a wrong id or simply that the US is storing slightly obsolete equipment in an unlikely battlefield as a precaution – 'we have them, we have no immediate use for them, let's put them somewhere where they may be needed in future.' It's something I would do. |

Militaries tend to hang on to old stuff "just in case". Might be cheaper than decommissioning it. (also to the confused poster above, Norway is in Europe) |

As I said above, it's simply a case of replacing old stuff with slightly newer stuff. The USMC started pre-positioning a brigade's worth of kit in Norway from the mid-1980s, so I'm guessing that this is a long-overdue update of the kit stored there (M60A3s perhaps?!). |

I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bunch of Shermans stored somewhere too, somewhere. Never know when they might come in handy! :) |

Weasel, not confused….When discussing the POMCUS sites, i should've said "Germany" and not "Europe"…. |

That clears it up :) If it's any consolation, after living here for 10 years, I can probably only find half the US states on a map. |
