Art of War in the 16th Century and (History of the) Art of War in the Middle Ages, both by C. W. C. Oman. A bit dated, but still definitely worth reading. Make sure you get the two volume version of AWMA – the single volume version is a reprint of Oman's thesis which he later expanded. |

I suggest you should be very wary of Oman; I'm not qualified to make any comment on a lot of his work, but I can absolutely assure you that his material on Scotland is very, very poor indeed. Same applies to Kelly DeVries 'Infantry Warfare in the 14th Century' (rough title – I don't have it to hand right now. |
