Has anyone on TMP visited Austerlitz and what is your opinion, please? I would seek to travel there by car and have one wheelchair passenger to consider. If not Austerlitz, any interesting, informative, and accessible Napoleonic battlefield between Paris and Vienna? |

I was at Austerlitz a few years ago and I thought it was a great battlefield visit. I'm not sure what to say about the wheelchair passenger. I didn't have enough time to walk a lot of the field, but you can go to some of the places and get good looks of the field to see what it was like – where Napoleon spent the start of the battle, the heights that the Austrians/Russians deployed on, down in the valley where you would have been obscured by fog at the start of the day. There's a small museum there with some interesting things. |

Thank you idontbelieveit. My companion has some mobility, just not over medium-ish and long distances. Napoleon's initial vantage point sounds good, especially if we could get thereabouts by car. I would be interested to know, on average, how long one might take to visit the battlefield. |

It is a very interesting battlefield to visit and most of the key spots are within fairly easy distance of car parks or road access. Napoleon's command post on the Žuráň has a small car park as does the main monument. I spent a full day there and did not feel that I had seen enough, although you could do a quick tour in 3-4 hours. Don't for Kolin from the 7YW if you're down that way. Valmy and Waterloo aren't that far from Paris. |

Of course there are the Napoleonic battlefields of Wagram and Aspern-Esseling, near Vienna, and the Austrian Army Museum in Vienna. The Bavarian Army Museum in Ingolstadt is great. |

Definitely worth the visit – and easily accessible from Brno. There's not a huge amount of tourist info here to direct you, but if you know where you're going, it's easy enough to get around (Žuráň, Stará pošta, Santon etc.). The chateau at Slavkov (which is the Czech name for the battle) is just down the road, and worth a visit too. |

It's a very unspoilt battlefield to visit. Kolin's not a bad shout if you go to Prague before turning south. It's doable in just a few hours. Take your Ospreys (because they're easy to carry) or similar, because there is a distinct lack of info on site. |

Not much to add here to what the others said, but I spent a day walking the entire perimeter back in 1992 or so, and you could get to all sides easily by car. The middle of the battlefield would be a little problematic for a wheelchair passenger. |

My wife and I have visited the battlefield twice. We found it to be a very easy battlefield to explore, and I would imagine as suitable for disabled visitors as any. There is a good road system, all of the villages are easy to find and there are a number of good viewpoints which make orientation simple. We used Scott Bowden's Napoleon and Austerlitz, which we found to be a great guide. The maps are good, and the descriptions of the battle add a lot to the visit. Our first visit was with a Midas guided tour. You will find our blog of the visit here. The link will take you to the summary page, but if you click on the links on the right you will find a blog entry on different parts of the battlefield link We enjoyed the first visit so much that we went back for a second, and much more detailed, walking holiday. You will find a second blog about that visit here. Once again use the links on the right to find the different areas of interest. link On our second visit we stayed at the historic Post House. It was much cheaper than I had expected, and far superior in every way to the Holiday Inn in Bruno we used for our first visit. The Post House has been converted into a very smart and modern hotel, with under ground parking even! But all of this has been done away from the historic buildings, which have great charm and appear not to have changed much since the battle. If you are visiting on a budget try to stay there for at least one night. Its right on the battlefield. My wife and I have visited a lot of Napoleonic battlefields, but Austerlitz is up near the top. In many ways it reminded me of my other favourite, which is Waterloo. Both are easy to get to, easy to get around and very easy to orientate. But we found Austerlitz to be much less affected by tourism. I hope you enjoy your visit, and I quite envy you exploring and discovering it for yourself. |

We appreciate your kind replies. Thank you. We will set forth to view Austerlitz armed with our Osprey Publishing copy of the battle. We are heartened by your positive responses, book recommendations, accomodation suggestions, and other mentioned Napoleonic sites of interest. This is really our first venture in the Napoleonic Wars and we look forward to having a good look around. Thank you all again. |

Austerlitz is an excellent battlefield. It is big though and a long walk. You need a car though as we walked it and missed too much. Good idea about Kolin. Craig |

My experience is now pretty old – Summer of 98. Back then I found Austerlitz a great battlefield to visit because it was still un-spoilt and not built up or encroached upon by a built-up area. All the key points were still un-touched and it was very easy to drive around the field. Well worth a visit. |

I was there for the bicentennial. Worth it, I'd say, and it's easy to reach from Brno, which with Pernstejn, Slavkov, Vranov, and Kromeriz (which uses several Czech accents that I can't type and you probably couldn't pronounce unless you are a Czech yourself) gives you plenty to see on a holiday. Don't miss the alarm clock sundial at Vranov castle, and the nude beach at Osada outside Brno. It's Brno, by the way, one syllable; not hard as Moravian place names go. Only Yanks try to turn it into Bruno. |

If you are driving from Paris to Vienna, then there are scores of battle fields that you could visit along the way. It all depends on your fields of interest as to what you might want to see. I would, however, put in a plug for also visitng some fortresses. IMHO, the best along that route is Neuf Brisach in Alsace. |
